Treasurer Schroder: Main Street Grants can be paid to additional small businesses

State Treasurer John M. Schroder announced today all qualifying small businesses now can receive a grant from the Main Street Recovery Program, even if they got prior federal assistance such as a Paycheck Protection Program loan.

Act 311 of the Louisiana 2020 Regular Session set aside $275 million from the CARES Act for the Louisiana Main Street Recovery Program but prioritized businesses who didn’t receive prior funding for the first 21 days. The restriction ended today.

“The end of the restriction opens up Main Street to thousands of additional small businesses across Louisiana,” said Treasurer Schroder. “Many of them have already applied. We just couldn’t initiate a review of them for the first 21 days of the program. Those who haven’t applied should do so immediately.”

Trevor Durr, a Converse High School baseball standout, has signed to play for Dr. Aaron Brister of Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas, as part of the 2021 recruiting class. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he could not have a traditional singing.

At Converse, he batted .400 with a .571 on-base percentage in nine games of what would have been his senior year, which was cut short due to the pandemic. As a junior, he was an All-State selection and is a three-time All-District selection.

His love of baseball runs deep, having played from childhood on the Dixie Youth fields of Sabine Parish, as a USSSA All-American at age 12, and spent summers playing with “showcase” teams the Louisiana Empire and Louisiana Athletics, coached by Todd Self. He began playing for Converse High School in seventh grade under the watchful eyes of Coach Lamar Boudreaux and Coach Dillion Paddie.

Back-to-School Rally cancelled

The Annual Back-to-School Rally, coordinated through the Toledo Bend Resort Ministry and chaired by Mary Gore, has announced that the annual Back-to-School Rally for 2020 has been cancelled. Leaders with the rally decided that the large gathering would be impossible with Covid-19 restrictions.

Gore has chaired the annual school supply give-a-away for a number of years with area volunteers serving on her committee.

The Rally, which was hosted in early August, prior to schools opening, has been a large part of the community. Students, from Pre-K through high school, have taken advantage of the free supplies, which had been donated by area churches and through donations from the community.

Emergency declared ahead of unprecedented dual hurricane threat

Hurricane Laura is barreling toward the Louisiana coast and could bring winds in excess of 100 miles per hour to Sabineland on Thursday, August 27.

A declaration of a state of emergency has been signed by Director David Davis of the Sabine Parish Office of Homeland Security, and Police Jury President Mike McCormic. Their declaration is in-line with similar measures put into effect by President Donald Trump and Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.

As of press time on Monday, August 24, Hurricane Marco is quickly closing in on southeast Louisiana. At the time, Tropical Storm Laura is expected to make landfall as a category two or three hurricane in southwest Louisiana or southeast Texas on Wednesday, August 26. It has the possibility of being the first category three hurricane to hit Louisiana since Rita hit Louisiana in 2005, only weeks after Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans. Meteorologists have predicted winds in excess of 100 miles per hour ahead of Laura’s landfall.
