Homeowners and renters in Grant, Jackson, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Rapides, Sabine, and Winn parishes may now apply for federal disaster assistance for uninsured and underinsured damage and losses resulting from Hurricane Laura.

To be eligible for federal disaster aid, storm damage and losses from the hurricane and flooding must have occurred as a result of Hurricane Laura from Aug. 22 to Aug. 27, 2020.

Nine parishes were previously included in the federal declaration to help homeowners and renters. They are Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, Ouachita, Vermilion and Vernon.

Survivors should file a claim at the same time as they apply to FEMA. Save yourself time, if you have insurance, you must file a claim.

SWEPCO offers update on power restoration

Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO) continues to add crews, equipment and materials to its recovery effort in the Central Louisiana areas damaged most heavily by Hurricane Laura.

“Extensive flooding, heavy tree damage, difficult access and many other challenges make power restoration in Hornbeck, Natchitoches and the many surrounding communities especially challenging,” said Drew Seidel, SWEPCO vice president of Distribution Region Operations. “Based on additional damage assessment and what our crews are seeing in the repair work they have already completed, we are extending the estimated time of restoration for the Hornbeck area to 10 p.m. Sunday. Many customers will be back on before then, but we want customers to be prepared for the possibility of a longer outage.”

Louisiana to remain in “phase two” of reopening due to pandemic

Louisiana to remain in “phase two” of reopening due to pandemic

COVID-19 remains a serious problem in the state of Louisiana as many aren’t taking mask usage and social distancing seriously.

Louisiana to remain in “phase two” of reopening due to pandemic

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards

Louisiana will stay in “phase two” of the White House-approved restrictions meant to control the spread of COVID-19 for at least two additional weeks, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Wednesday.

Crowds will remain limited to 5o people, face coverings still will be required in public settings, and bars still will be closed to on-premise service. Most other businesses will be limited to half of their normal capacity.

The current order is scheduled to end Friday. Edwards said White House officials approve of his decision to maintain the restrictions.

Many business owners and Republican politicians have urged Edwards to loosen the restrictions, citing the economic damage. Many restaurants, for example, have trouble sustaining their business while limited to 5o percent capacity.

Treasurer Schroder: Main Street Grants can be paid to additional small businesses

State Treasurer John M. Schroder announced today all qualifying small businesses now can receive a grant from the Main Street Recovery Program, even if they got prior federal assistance such as a Paycheck Protection Program loan.

Act 311 of the Louisiana 2020 Regular Session set aside $275 million from the CARES Act for the Louisiana Main Street Recovery Program but prioritized businesses who didn’t receive prior funding for the first 21 days. The restriction ended today.

“The end of the restriction opens up Main Street to thousands of additional small businesses across Louisiana,” said Treasurer Schroder. “Many of them have already applied. We just couldn’t initiate a review of them for the first 21 days of the program. Those who haven’t applied should do so immediately.”
