The Southern Plainsmen will be in concert on Friday May 28, at 6 p.m. at the Fort Jesup State Historic Site.

Tickets will be $6 and may be purchased at the gate. All proceeds will go toward improving Fort Jesup State Historic Site and funding the Bicentennial Celebration in 2022.

State Attorney General Jeff Landry’s office was granted a Contradictory Hearing regarding the state’s motion to revoke bail for Norman Ural Booker III. Judge Stephen B. Beasley set the hearing for June 3 at 8:30 a.m.

Booker, longtime Sabine Parish educator and former Principal at Many High School, was arrested Oct. 29, 2020 for Misdemeanor Sexual Battery, Indecent Behavior with Juveniles, two counts of Sexual Battery and Oral Sexual Battery.

His bail was set at $20,000 and the court set as specific conditions of bail that he “will have no contact with the victims and no contact with anyone under the age of 17 to whom he is not related.” Judge Beasley’s original conditions of bail also stated, “no contact means no contact.”

On February 8, a Grand Jury indicted Booker and on April 22, he was arraigned and entered pleas of Not Guilty to all charges.

The Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) has awarded two college scholarships to area students. The 2021 Glynn Carver Memorial Scholarship for $3000 has been awarded to Logan Williams of Shelbyville High School. Logan plans to attend Texas A&M University in the fall and will be studying to earn a veterinarian degree. Logan has been very active in many community and school organizations, including FFA, Beta Club, JCC/Young Ambassadors, UIL, The Shelbyville Military Marching Band, five sports, Ensemble, and Student Council. He has also achieved an outstanding scholastic record.

TBLA established the Glynn Carver Memorial Scholarship in May of 2019 in recognition of the contributions that Mr. Carver made throughout his life to Toledo Bend and the surrounding communities as well as the pioneering impact that he had on the fishing industry beyond the borders of Toledo Bend.

State Representative Larry Bagley has been working with the new Louisiana State Director of Broadband Development, Veneeth Iyengar. Iyengar has agreed to come to District 7 and take part in some Town Hall Meetings.

Bagley will be hosting two separate meetings on Friday, June 11 ^th . The first meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Logansport High School at the Practice Gym, located on the right side of the campus as you enter the school grounds. The address is 17228 Hwy 5 in Logansport. The second meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. at Stonewall Government Plaza (inside the new DPSO facility), located at 1746 Hwy 17 in Stonewall. Both of the meetings will be open to the public. Watch for upcoming advertisements regarding the meetings.

Sabine Parish Director of Homeland Security David Davis wants the public to be aware of several COVID-19 vaccination events that will happen in our local communities over the coming weeks.

In a press release, he states that the only way to rid Sabine Parish of COVID-19 is to vaccinate citizens 16 years and older.

These vaccination events will allow you to drive up, register, get your vaccination, and never leave your vehicle. The process is simple and easy, and they will be back in 21 days if a second shot is necessary, as those using the service will have a choice of the Pfizer or J&J vaccine.

Native Americans danced, sang, beat the drums and celebrated their heritage and culture at the annual spring Powwow held at the end of April at the tribal grounds in Ebarb.

Adults, tribal elders, and children were colorfully dressed in their native attire as they danced around the center arena to the tunes of native drums. Spectators watched in awe.

Gourd dances, a grand entry parade, women’s jingle dances and other Native American dances entertained both the dancers and the visitors.

(The Center Square) – Gov. John Bel Edwards has ordered Louisiana’s COVID-19 mitigation restrictions to be loosened further Wednesday, including eliminating the statewide mask mandate.

Local governments and private businesses are free to continue requiring face coverings. Schools, universities, health care facilities, public transit and most state government buildings will continue to require masks, though agency heads can request a waiver. Edwards said agencies led by his cabinet appointees will continue to require masks.

Limits on the number of people who can gather outdoors will be lifted. Organizers of indoor events, including sporting events, can choose 75% occupancy with distancing or full occupancy with masks, Edwards said Tuesday. At least 10 feet should be maintained between the stage and the audience during live music performances, according to the new mandates.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced that signup has reopened for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 (CFAP 2) as part of the Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative. The initial CFAP 2 signup ended on Dec. 11, 2020, but USDA has reopened sign-up for CFAP 2 for at least 60 days beginning April 5, 2021, for producers to apply or make modifications to existing applications.

CFAP 2 programs provides direct financial relief to producers due to market disruptions and associated costs because of COVID-19.
