The Twelfth Annual Youth Fish Fest was held Saturday June 5, 2021. The day began as a very windy and overcast morning, but luckily the rain held off, as the Sixty-nine fishermen entered Cypress Bend Park free, courtesy of the Sabine River Authority. The event was open to school age children registered in kindergarten through 12th grade for the school year 2020-2021 attending schools in Louisiana and Texas. Fishermen signed in early, staked out their spots and were eagerly waiting for the clock to strike 7:30 a.m., so they could begin to fish.

The Amateur Radio Club of Sabine has set their annual field day as Saturday, June 26 until 12 p.m. on Sunday, June 27 at noon at the Emergency Operations Center building next to the fire house on San Antonio Avenue in Many. The public is invited.

Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, uses a section of the radio frequency spectrum for the non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, recreation, and emergency communication. There are many other uses for the service as well.

Amateur radio operators can be seen as unsung heroes during times of disaster due to their proficiency in long-range communication with their radio devices. For instance, following a hurricane, cell phone towers can be toppled and service halted, and landlines will become unavailable. Operators serve as a necessary line to keep rescuers up to date on information.

The Sabine Parish Leaders Against Litter (SPLAL) has a new chairman, Ricky Yeldell.

The Sabine Parish Tourist Commission is proud to announce that J. Sterling “Chip” Davis, III has been selected as the Executive Director by the Board of Directors. After reviewing over 150 applications, Mr. Davis exceeded expectations and we were pleased when he accepted the offer and relocated to Sabine Parish. Chip’s depth of experience with convention and visitor organizations, hotel leadership, development, management, and sales were the determining factors for the Board’s selection.

He assumed his position on May 24, 2021. In addition to a rigorous orientation program, Chip has already begun developing relationships in the community, so he can fully represent the parish in the future including the Bassmaster Classic this June in Fort Worth.

“Trail of Tears”, the book about the Choctaw Apache Tribe of Ebarb, was recently published and is now available for people interested in the tribe’s history and culture to purchase.

Dorsey Ebarb Bronson, Danny Ebarb and Mary Meshell Carlin, authors of the book, have worked with Nichols Discount Store of Many to place copies of Trail of Tears available for sale at the store.

Sending a reminder to registered youth fishermen, fishing will begin early Saturday morning, June 5th on the banks of Cypress Bend Park at the 12th annual Toledo Bend Lake Association/Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District Fish Fest. Fishing begins at 7:30 a.m. Weigh in time will be no later than 11:00 a.m. The event was opened to youth fishermen who attended kindergarten through twelfth grade in 2020/2021 in Louisiana and Texas. Registration has ended and eligible fishermen have been contacted.

The Many Community Center (aka Sabine Theater) is getting a facelift, thanks to talented artist Angela Osborn and her assistants.

The groups of cheerful exterior paintings brighten up the theater and their theme are entirely movie/film oriented. “Let’s Go to the Movies and Have a Great Time” features movie cameras, painted lights, popcorn, stars and a young woman enjoying a movie at the theater.

While driving past the theater, many people have seen the works in progress and are highly complimentary of Ms. Osborn’s work.

Mary Brocato, chairperson of the Cultural District Advisory Committee, commented, “Angela is doing a superb job of beautifying our historical old theater and we’re so glad that our citizens are pleased with our efforts to brighten up the theater as part of our efforts to make the cultural district even more attractive.

Once again, the Annual Back-to-School Rally is being planned following a year of lock-down, according to Mary Gore of Toledo Bend Ministries. Gore has served as Committee Chairman for a number of years for the free give-away of school supplies for Sabine Parish students in Pre-K through 12th grade.

The 2020 rally was a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic and was canceled last year due to Covid restrictions.

“We plan to come back strong in 2021 to provide needed supplies for all Sabine Parish students,” Gore noted.

The 2021 Rally will be held in the Family Life Center at the First United Methodist Church of Many on Saturday, July 31 beginning at 8 a.m.

Serving as Mistress of Ceremonies will be Judge Elizabeth Pickett of the Third Circuit of Appeals. She was first elected in 1997 and has served ever since.

If you have started construction on a new home or want to update a room in your house, you probably have experienced sticker shock when it comes to the price of building materials, especially lumber.

Last year, the price was $354 per thousand foot of lumber. By the first week of May, the price had risen to an alltime high of $1686, an increase of nearly 475%. By May 18, the price had cooled some, down to $1,264.

This explosion in price is being fueled by high demand and an extremely tight supply of lumber. New housing construction and remodeling projects of existing homes is driving the demand. Some of this is driven by the pandemic and many people working from home.

LaTrinda McGee of Zwolle and Naomi Adams of Natchitoches were named winners of the Northwestern State University Department of English, Foreign Languages, & Cultural Studies Excellence in First-Year Writing Award.

McGee, a freshman nursing major from Zwolle, won Best Narrative Essay for her story, “8 Minutes 46 Seconds.” The essay was written for Instructor Mariann Wilson’s online English 1010 class. Her personal narrative centers on the murder of George Floyd, a cousin she knew personally as Perry, and recounts McGee’s journey to D.C. to participate in the August 2020 March on Washington in Floyd’s memory.
