Public Service Commission votes to protect Cleco employees

Despite objections by attorneys representing Cleco, the LPSC voted 3-2, at a commission business and executive session meeting, to adopt a service quality program for Cleco. Such a measure insures the current level of Cleco employs (approximately 1,200) will remain even if the proposed sale is not approved by the commission later this month.

There will be an alzheimer’s and dementia support group, hosted by Many Healthcare North and Natchitoches Regional Medical Center Behavioral Services, on Tuesday, February 9 from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Scholarship created to honor notable Converse softball player

It was supposed to be a surprise 50th birthday gift, but the creation of the Ginger Craig Softball Scholarship at Northwestern State instead is a tribute to precious parents and a gesture of thanks for a life-changing opportunity. A Converse native and career Red River Parish educator since ending one of the most remarkable careers in Lady Demon softball history in 1988, N-Club Hall of Fame member Ginger Craig is following through on the plans of her mother and best friend.

Monday, January 18 was a joyous day for a large congregation of people, who came together in celebration of the life of noted civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is the 21st year for the celebration, which has grown year-by-year into a huge celebration with live musicians, a choir made up entirely of children, and multiple praise groups.

Kidnapping puts two in federal custody

Two men are currently in federal custody in connection with the New Year’s Eve kidnapping of a child in Zwolle. Gary D. Cutright, 21, of Zwolle and Quannell T. Newton, 31, of Many were arrested on December 31 on warrants that included charges of alleged conspiracy to commit kidnapping. A grand jury in January brought these two men and Cory Carnell Mitchell, 27, of Teneha, Texas, official charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

Career Compass, RoyOMartin, NWLTC collaborate

Northwest Louisiana Technical College’s Natchitoches campus recently hosted a one day training program that focused on community and technical college programs, FAFSA, and Career Compass—Louisiana’s premiere educational non-profit that helps students achieve their post-secondary and career aspirations. Career Compass is dedicated to helping every high school student continue their education. Their mission is to remove the obstacles that keep students from continuing their education.

Fort Jesup State Historic Site needs your help

Due to the current budget difficultly, the State of Louisiana has placed Fort Jesup State Historic Site and a number of other State Historic Sites on caretaker status. In sort, this means that the site will be maintained but that tours are only available by appointment.
