Sam Rivers Jr. has been chosen as this year’s Oldest Logger and will be honored at the annual Zwolle Loggers and Forestry Festival on the second weekend of May.

Rivers, who loves this festival, was instrumental in founding the Henrietta Rivers Memorial 5K Run, which is held during the festival.

The Gasaway, Neal, Maxie, Carhee, and Thomas families from the Yellow Pine area of Florien involved their children in the Spring Trash Bash held March 24. They felt it was a great way to teach the children and teens to take responsibility for where they live.

Ways parents can teach kids not to litter:

--Dedicate a couple of times a month to collect trash around your homes or neighborhood with your kids.

“Larceny and Old Lace,” a spoof of “Arsenic and Old Lace” will be performed onstage Friday night, May 4 at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon, May 6 at 2 p.m. at the Many Community Center, according to Janet Elam, director.

Last year, Elam directed another teen play at the request of the Sabine Parish School Board Office. A talented actress herself, Elam has appeared in numerous Sabine Parish Players’ productions directed by Mary Bozeman, and in several productions at the First United Methodist Church of Many. Her comedic and theatrical skills were honed when she resided in Jena, performing at the Jena Little Theatre, along with her husband, Gary.

In a recent news release, Sabine District Attorney Don Burkett stated that after an extensive investigation conducted by the La. State Police, the May 21, 2017, shooting death of Ricco D. Holden by Converse Chief of Police Chief Manshack was deemed justifiable.

The release also provided a summary of facts determined by the investigation.

Toledo Bend Lake is high and so is the enthusiasm for the Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) and Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Fish Fest 2018. The ninth annual tournament will be held at the Sabine River Authority’s Cypress Bend Park. Youth fishermen will be easily recognized in their TBLA/Sabine SWCD t-shirts on Saturday, June 2.

The goal is to register 150 youth by April 27. Fishing time begins at 7:30 a.m. Fishermen can start fishing after they check in at the registration table. Weigh-in time will be at 11 a.m. The event is open to school age children registered in kindergarten through 12th grade for the school year 2017-2018 attending schools in Louisiana and Texas. There will be six specie categories for first, second, and third place. Specie categories are bass, bream, catfish, white perch, turtle, and other. All fishermen must be pre-registered to participate on Saturday, June 2.
