Boater Joe Beebee of The Woodlands, Texas, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Cowboy Division tournament on Toledo Bend Lake Sunday with a two-day cumulative catch of 10 bass weighing 27 pounds, 14 ounces. For his win, Beebee netted $5,632.

Beebee spent the event fishing in Housen Bayou, focusing on a mile-long stretch of hydrilla, pepper grass and lily pads where they all mixed together.

“I fished in two feet of water or less, but there was deep water nearby – that was key,” said Beebee, who earned his first win in BFL competition. “I primarily caught them on two lures – frogs and Texas rigs.”

Rose Martinez of Zwolle has been named this year’s First Lady of the famous Tamale Fiesta.

She was born on September 19, 1943 to Jessie Ebarb and Rita McComic.  Although her father has passed away, her mother is alive and well at 94-years-old. Her companion of 14 years, Thurman Webb, is with her as she begins her year as First Lady of the 43rd Annual Tamale Fiesta.

“Life is good,” she says.

Years ago, as the fiesta was in its planning, the festival’s founder, Rogers P. Loupe, asked her to help make tamales to realize his vision for Zwolle.  Of course, she said yes.

“My kids weren’t too excited because they knew they were in for lots of work,” she explained.  “For several years my kids, my friend JoAnne, and I made lots and lots of tamales.

Accident claims life of James Moss

James Moss

On Tuesday, September 25, a crash involving two vehicles seriously injured a young man from Many.  He later died from those injuries.

Troopers responded to the crash around 5:25 p.m., which occurred on Highway 191 at Highway 1215.  The crash involved a 2005 Ford Taurus, driven by James Moss, 22, and a 2017 Ford Expedition, driven by Gretchen Wilkerson, 39, of Many. The Taurus was northbound on Highway 191, approaching Highway 1215, when Moss turned left and entered the southbound lane.  This action placed his vehicle in the direct travel path of the southbound Expedition, which resulted in a collision.

Moss received serious injuries and was transported to University Health in Shreveport for treatment.  Later, at around 9:00 p.m., he was pronounced dead.  It is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt.

Wilkerson was wearing her seat belt but received minor injuries.  She was transported to Sabine Medical Center for treatment.

Donations for Depot Museums coming in

Donations to convert the Many Depot into the Sabine Parish Historical Depot Museum are arriving steadily at City Hall according to Many Mayor Ken Freeman.

Freeman said that more than $6,000 had been donated as of Friday, September 21.

“These donations are in direct response to a letter that was sent to individuals, government and civic organizations, and businesses in late August,” Freeman said. “We sent out more than 500 letters and asked for donations so that we could continue the work and build a museum.”

The mayor is hopeful that still more donations will arrive in the next few weeks.
