The crisp fall air ushers in a tradition, accompanied by the familiar smell of tamales, that is forty-five years strong. A tradition that celebrates the vibrant culture of the Town of Zwolle and surrounding communities. A tradition steeped in rich Native American and Spanish heritage.

Every second full weekend in October the people of the area, as well as people from across multiple States, anticipate the return of the Zwolle Tamale Fiesta each year.

Just as the Fiesta has become a tradition for the area, Mia Curtis’s Spanish Classes at Zwolle High School and Ebarb School have developed their own traditions to help celebrate and set the scene for the annual Zwolle Tamale Fiesta.

(The LSU AgCenter has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Southern Extension Risk Management Education (SERME) to cater to the needs of beginning horticulture farm operators.

In a survey conducted by the Louisiana Young Farmers Coalition, members identified several marketing and financial topics of great need for beginning farmer training, including business management, marketing, enterprise diversification and record keeping.

This program will offer a series of webinars, hands-on workshops and farm tours to train new farmers, making them more resilient to risk, particularly in the areas of finance and marketing.

Beat the rain with container-grown vegetables

Beat the rain with container-grown vegetables

Vegetables such as tomatoes can be very productive in containers. Photo by Heather Kirk-Ballard/LSU AgCenter

With the historic rains this spring and summer, we’ve doubled — and in some cases tripled — the average for several places in Louisiana. It is no wonder some of our plants, yards and gardens are suffering. We’ve already reached 78% of the annual amount of rain, with another half a year to go.

With that rain comes many issues for all sorts of plants, especially our vegetables. If you planted in the ground with saturated soils and poor drainage, you may have already lost your tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables. Even in raised beds like the ones I use at my home, my tomatoes are toast.
