Mansfield SHS offers historical insight into the world of PBS’s “Mercy Street.”

Challenging of gender roles, race relations, sectional issues, war profiteering, and ethics of the medical field all sound like modern day issues, but they are nothing new to American society. The new PBS series “Mercy Street” drops the modern viewer on the doorstep of the lives impacted by America’s Civil War. Away from the battlefields that garner most of our attention, this series shines light on the brutal realities of the home-front. You are introduced to the gore-filled hospitals and their staffs that try to stem the flood of blood caused by the slaughter of the war.

Down, Dirty Seminar reaches 13th year

The Sabine Master Gardeners will host their annual Down & Dirty Gardening Seminar on March 5 at Cypress Bend Resort and Conference Center. The first featured speaker is Dr. William C. Welch, Professor and Texas AgriLife Extension Service Landscape Horticulturist at Texas A&M University. He will speak on “Garden Redesign.” For several years he wrote a monthly column for Southern Living magazine and others.
