Soldiers and civilians used nature and a lot of ingenuity to overcome severe shortages of food, medicine, and household items during the Civil War. On Saturday, July 16, come out to Mansfield State Historic Site and discover which substitutes were successful and those that were not.

Randolph family gathers for reunion

Descendents, relatives, and friends of S.P. Randolph gathered together for the annual reunion held this year on June 25 at the Civic Center in Florien. The day began around 10:30 a.m. as everyone began to bring in their potluck dishes. Aunt Lucille and Callie’s quilt was hung in the center of the building, and as always it is an admired centerpiece that catches great attention! The building was decorated with our family photos, and this year there were new, old photos that had been discovered.

Northwestern State University’s School of Creative and Performing Arts will present a Fun With Music Camp July 11-16. Children ages five to 11 can participate in a variety of music experiences including singing, music games, instrumental activities, composing and many other creative music activities.

Cleco offers tips to beat the heat

Triple-digit summertime temperatures are a fact of life in Louisiana. For most, beating the heat means lowering the thermostat, which can lead to higher electric bills. Staying cool and saving money is easy if you follow Cleco’s tips. “Air conditioners are the largest energy users in a home,” said Shirley Turner, vice president of customer experience. “For maximum efficiency, Cleco recommends setting the thermostat at 78 degrees, or as high as comfort will permit, and using a fan to help the air feel 10 degrees cooler.”

Folk Festival set for July 15-16

The 37th Annual Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival will be held July 15-16 in Prather Coliseum, which is located at 220 South Jefferson Street in Natchitoches on the campus of Northwestern State University. The site is wheelchair accessible and the festival is family oriented. No alcohol is allowed or sold on the site. The 2016 Festival theme is “Emerging Artists,” celebrating the many outstanding new artists keeping traditions alive in Louisiana.

Cleco donates fans to help seniors stay cool and save money this summer
