Visit Oakland Plantation in October

The weather is slowly cooling off and October is a great time to visit Cane River Creole National Historical Park; they have a variety of programs and activities for everyone. On Thursday October 8, at 7 p.m. Shreveport author Philis Caskey will be giving a lecture about her book “Skinny Dipping in Cane River.”

Sabine State Bank donates to agriculture students

Sabine State Bank of Many recently presented to the Louisiana Agricultural Teacher’s Association a check for $300. This money goes to agriculture education majors in college to assist them during their quarter or semester of student teaching. Each student is presented a check in the amount of $800 during this semester.

National 4-H Week set

National 4-H Week has been scheduled for Oct. 4-10, according to Nan Arthur, 4-H Agent in Sabine Parish. Each year during National 4-H Week, local and parish clubs have the opportunity to showcase what they have gained from their 4-H memberships through activities and events at the local level.

Programs gives glimpse of “A Soldier’s Life”

Learn about the life of the average Union and Confederate soldier at Mansfield State Historic Site on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The programs will center on the typical uniform and equipment that the soldiers would have carried and used; including not only their military gear, but also personal items which allowed them to occupy their minds and remind them of those back home.

Harlow recalls first month as St. Jude Queen

My first month as the new Miss St. Jude Fall Fest has been amazing. I have already been able to do a couple things to represent my title. The first event I got to go to was the grand re-opening of the newly renovated West Park Pool in DeRidder, my home town. There, I met Senator John Smith who helped fund this amazing and beautiful addition to a great city.

Townsend announces for FFA national candidacy

Brooke Townsend, an FFA member and graduate from Converse High School, has been selected to represent Louisiana as the National Officer Candidate for FFA (Future Farmers of America). Brooke served as the Louisiana FFA State Vice-President from 2013-2014 and running for a national office has always been a dream to her. She currently attends Louisiana Tech University and majors in Agricultural Education with a minor in Biology.
