In May 1940 Louisiana began to be invaded. No not by an enemy army, but by the units of the United States Army who would be part of the first units to maneuver throughout the Sabine area, which was an extensive area laid out on maps for maneuver use ran from the Red River westward to the Sabine River and south towards Lake Charles.

Lt. General Stanly Embick was the overall commander of this first maneuver and had his headquarters at Camp Beauregard. At Camp Beauregard was the Blue Army Zone, while the Red Army Zone was from below Jasper, Texas, and north to Nacogdoches. In these maneuvers came many enlisted men and officers who in the coming years of World War II would make great achievements and would become famous as commanders of specialized units. Josephine Remedies Martinez celebrates 90th birthday

Josephine Remedies Martinez

Josephine Remedies Martinez has reached quite a milestone, that of 90 years of a full, well-lived life.

She is the youngest daughter of Steve and Maggie Procell Remedies. Her siblings are Henry, Louis, Frank, Louise, and Steve Jr.

Growing up she enjoyed going to the movies with her mother and her niece Annie Ruth. The cost of a movie was 10 cents at a time. The love of reading was another pastime she enjoyed when not doing her chores expected of farm life.

She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she never missed a mass or stations of the cross. The only transportation was a local school bus that everyone who lived nearby could ride. In the later years, transportation was provided by Henry Remedies, who drove a work bus that allowed anyone a ride to church.

Get It Growing: Try starting plants from seeds

Containers

and sturdy, have drainage holes and fit into the space available for growing the young plants. Photo by Rick Bogren/LSU AgCenter

At some point, many gardeners discover seed catalogs offer a much greater selection of annual flowers and vegetables than can be found at the local nursery. To grow those wonderful plants, however, you must be able to grow your own transplants from seed.

Here’s how to do it.

Containers for sowing seeds

Containers should be clean and sturdy, have drainage holes and fit into the space available for growing the young plants.

Seeds may be planted thickly into plastic flats, trays, pots or other handy containers for later transplanting into smaller individual containers. Starting seeds this way initially saves space but involves additional labor transplanting the young seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough.
