LSMSA hosts annual matriculation ceremony to welcome new students

The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts welcomed 157 new students during the school’s annual matriculation ceremony held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium located on the campus of Northwestern State University.

The ceremony recognized students’ accomplishments, reinforced their commitment to LSMSA and encouraged them to apply the necessary diligence to persevere until reaching commencement.

Youth Against Drugs receives United Way support

Youth Against Drugs, a local organization initiated by Sabine Sheriff Ronny Richardson to focus efforts on preventing drug use before it ever starts and to help direct young people toward positive choices before reaching high school, was recently presented with a $1,000 donation by Jennifer Martin from the United Way of Northwest Louisiana.

The group, composed of sixth-eighth graders, meets monthly to hear a speaker, have a short devotional, enjoy a meal and play basketball.

Harmon and Hagelin to marry

The parents of Heather Brooke Harmon are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter to Jared Michael Hagelin of Bossier City.

Heather is the daughter of Tim and Belinda Harmon of Minden, and the granddaughter of Verna Hubenak of El Campo and Wilton and Delores Niemeier also of El Campo. She is a 2011 graduate of Minden High School and a 2014 graduate of Northwestern State Louisiana of Shreveport with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She is a registered nurse employed by Willis Knighton Health System

Kay named 2017 Tournoi Festival Queen

Holly Christine Kay of Robeline was crowned the 2017 Louisiana Tournoi Festival Queen. “Le Tournoi” which means tournament in French, is the ancient sporting event of jousting.

Le Tournoi requires horsemanship, skill, and accuracy. The knights wear their traditional garb while riding horseback at neck breaking speeds around a semicircular quarter mile track.
