Herman Garcie was born on March 20, 1937 and peacefully entered into rest on March 11, 2024, surrounded by his devoted wife, Ella and loving family. Known as “Red Rider” in the Zwolle and Sabine Parish community, Herman’s legacy was deeply rooted in a lifelong career as a truck driver, loving husband, father and “Popo” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was honored as the Oldest Logger of the Year in 2016 at the 25th Annual Zwolle Loggers Forestry Festival. Herman passed on his hard work ethic to his sons, with Jerry continuing his father’s tradition of logging. Herman parked his log truck at Toledo Town after hauling his final load for his son-in-law, Ernie Sepulvado, Sr. owner of Timber Harvesters in 1999.

His love for Ella, his wife of 67 years, was evident in their inseparable bond. Where there was one, there was the other. When you spoke of one, you spoke of the other. They set an inspiring example for their six children, 24 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren.

Herman found joy in deer hunting, spending decades at the Blue Lake Hunting Club. What brought him even more joy was sharing those years hunting with his sons and grandsons. A man who is described by others as living his life to the fullest and always having a good time, Herman’s love for dancing, especially to Cajun music, was well-known to everyone.

Herman is survived by his wife Ella, three sons (Ricky/Sherry, Jerry/Tracy, Randy/Karen), and three daughters (Linda, Danette, Tina). His sister, Joyce Leone (Simon) and brother, Pete Garcie, continue to cherish his memory. Herman’s passing follows the recent loss of his sister, Hazel Ebarb who undoubtedly welcomed him to heaven. He joins his parents, Sam and Elva Garcie, OD Willhite, along with siblings James Garcia, Allen Garcie, Donald Garcie, Ronald Garcie, Syble (Sibby) Garcie, Joseph (Sammy) Garcie, and great granddaughter, Ava Reese Garcie.

Herman Garcie’s legacy lives on through his family, a history of nieces and nephews, and the fond memories shared by many in the town of Zwolle and Sabine Parish. His family would like to extend a special thanks to Sabine Medical Center ER staff for their compassion shown to his family, Sabine Rehab and Retirement for the love they showed to their father during his time there for rehab, staff at Josh Crow Physical Therapy and Monica McManus for the wonderful care she gave to their parents. Even on his worst days there wasn’t a single time Herman didn’t thank the staff for whatever care they provided to him. That is what kind of sweet soul he had. He was grateful for life, family and friends especially his special friends/family, C J. and Sherry Landreneau from Mamou, Louisiana. He put a smile on everyone’s face that he met. May his soul rest in eternal peace and we have no doubt Red Rider danced his way to heaven.
