Huey Paul Merritt

Huey Merritt, age 65, passed away September 28, 2021 due to cancer. He went by Paul during his adult life. Paul was born Feb 5, 1956 in Converse to Cicero and Verna Cochran Merritt. Paul grew up in Hornbeck graduating high school there in 1974.

When he finished high school Paul enlisted in the Navy which trained him in electronics. Navy duty took him to San Diego, Guam, Hawaii, Australia, Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Canada, and various states of the USA. Paul first believed in Jesus as Lord and Savior in 1975 when 2 witnesses explained salvation scripture to him in Guam.

After completing a 4 year hitch in the Navy, Paul enrolled at Northwestern State University, NSU, in the fall of 1978 where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology in May 1982. Paul enrolled at LSU in the fall of 1989 where he earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in May 1991.

After NSU, Paul moved to San Jose, California in the heart of the Silicon Valley and worked in electronics manufacturing. Paul worked as a Design Engineer at Austin, Texas, an Electronics Instructor at Lamar State University in Orange, Texas, Software Engineer at Ft Worth, Texas, but mostly as an Electronics Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington DC and with the Air Force at Ogden, Utah and Oklahoma City from which he retired.

Paul was married to Anna Marie Merritt, had no children, and the marriage ended after several years with an amiable divorce.

After retirement Paul lived out the rest of his life at New Boston, Texas. Paul was an avid reader who spent lots of time studying world events, news, bible prophecy, and scripture. Paul did volunteer work delivering meals to elderly and disabled people.

Paul was the first of his siblings to pass away. He is survived by his brothers, Nelson and Cas Merritt; his sister, Mary Talbott; nieces, Sharon Walden; Sheila Earhart; Sue Blei; nephews, Alan and Tracy Talbott; Troy; Mark; and Kevin Merritt.

Please join us for funeral Services at Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas October 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with burial following at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Hemphill, Texas.
