Charlotte Webb Wilburn

Funeral services for Charlotte Webb Wilburn, 93, of Pelican, were on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Mansfield. A graveside service immediately followed at the Pelican Cemetery.

Charlotte was born on February 22, 1928 to Corrie and Rena Webb. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on September 17, 2021.

After graduating valedictorian from Noble High School, Charlotte worked at the Southern Bell Telephone Office in Mansfield. During that time, she was set up on a double date with Burnis Wilburn through mutual friends. Charlotte and Burnis married just months later and spent 72 sweet years together. Meme was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in high school and then went to work as the Assistant Postmaster in Pelican. She was soon promoted to Head Postmaster in Pelican, where she worked for 23 years before retiring.

Charlotte was a beautiful soul, a kind-hearted, classy lady with impeccable character. She loved to cook for family and friends, often serving delicious homemade fried chicken and the best purple hull peas around. She delighted in baking her family’s favorite dessert, “Meme’s Gravy Cake,” which was warm vanilla cake topped with a hot, homemade caramel sauce. Charlotte enjoyed sitting around the kitchen table with a fresh-brewed pot of coffee, telling old stories and giggling. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. In her younger years, she enjoyed shopping in Shreveport with her daughter Linda, always on the prowl for a new pair of shoes or a purse. Charlotte’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored her, making many lasting memories “at Meme’s house.” Charlotte was a Christ-follower who lived out her faith in all circumstances. She had a beautiful singing voice, especially when she sang her favorite hymn, “Amazing Grace.”

Left to cherish the sweet memories of Charlotte are her son, Glen and wife Betty; daughter, Linda and husband Robbo; five grandchildren, Allison Carpenter; Willis Wilburn; Ann Vidrine; Becki Brawner; and Ashley Sonnier; and 12 great-grandchildren, Emma and Max Hudson; Eli Wilburn; Reece; Bryce and Juliana Carpenter; Sadie; Aaron and Sophie Vidrine; Olivia and Camille Sonnier; and Kristina Rutkowski.

Also left to cherish many wonderful memories of Meme are her sisters-in-law, Marie Webb and Winnie Webb; and her cousin, Troy Hugh Webb.

She is preceded in death by her precious husband, Burnis Wilburn; her parents; and her siblings, two brothers, Willis Webb and Raymond Webb; and five sisters, Adelle Webb; Hattie Lou Simmons; Mable Vines; Pauline Elliott; and Mary Jean Thompson.

Pallbearers for Charlotte were Willis Wilburn, Eli Wilburn, Bryce Carpenter, Colby Sonnier, Marshall Carpenter, and Dustin Vidrine. Honorary pallbearer was Aaron Vidrine.

The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to Charlotte’s loving caregivers who became like dear family members: Sharra Johnson, Jimmie Monroe, and Joyce Simpson. These precious ladies brought years of sunshine to Charlotte’s life, and the family is forever grateful. The family is also thankful for the gentle compassion and care given by the nurses at Superior Hospice in Mansfield.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15).
