Nada Louise Wedgeworth Powell, 79, of Florien passed from this life on Friday, July 5, 2019 at Sabine Retirement & Rehab Center in Many.

She was born on November 28, 1939 in Shreveport. She touched the lives of hundreds of young students during her more than 20 years of teaching in Calcasieu and Vernon Parishes. Nada was once honored as Vernon Parish Teacher of the Year. Her primary focus was fifth grade, yet she did teach other levels as needed. She delighted in her myriad of students and many of them still attest she was the first to help them believe they could indeed become and do anything they chose.

Nada was preceded in death by her parents, Preston and Mae Wedgeworth.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lynn Powell; children, Teresa Chance, Mike Powell, and Lisa Brent; grandchildren, Matthew Chance and Rachel Powell; brother, Don Wedgeworth; along with a host of friends.

Just a few of Nada’s talents and interests included an unbeatable hook-shot that helped lead Negreet girls’ varsity basketball team to the state championships multiple years in the 1950s, avid reader, sewing and crafts enthusiast, canning expert, and former Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Hornbeck.

A private special memorial celebration for Nada is being planned for later this year by her immediate family.
