Funeral services for James Henry Downs, 80, of Florien, were held on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. at Union Baptist Church in Florien with Rev. Wilton Anthony and Rev. John Thompson officiating. In addition to the pastors, Henry’s nephew, Douglas Downs, shared memories of Henry. Burial followed in the Florien Cemetery in Florien. Visitation was held Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at 5 p.m. at Warren Meadows Funeral Home in Many. James Henry Downs was born on Saturday, April 14, 1933, in Blanchard. He passed away on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at Sabine Retirement & Rehabilitation Center in Many. Henry was a life-long Florien Blackcat fan. A spray of gold flowers with a Blackcat and basketball rested on top of the casket and at the conclusion of the graveside services, was donated to Florien High School, where it will be displayed in the trophy case in memory of “Florien’s #1 Blackcat Fan.” The Florien Blackcats and Lady Cats honored Henry with their attendance at the services. Henry was buried in his prized Florien Blackcats letterman jacket. He was presented the jacket several years ago by the Blackcat cheerleaders. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Martin Downs; his father, William Jesse Downs; his brothers, Jesse “Franklin” Downs, John “Porky” Downs and Clifton “Peanut” Downs and his wife, Patsy Miller Downs. He is survived by his brother, Jesse Charles “Cotton” Downs and wife Gail of Fisher; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Serving as pallbearers were past and present ball coaches, including Jimmy Leach, Eddie Jones, Jr., Tim Parker, Klifford Walker, Dewain Strother and Angela Anthony.
