Josephine Remedies Martinez celebrates 90th birthday

Josephine Remedies Martinez

Josephine Remedies Martinez has reached quite a milestone, that of 90 years of a full, well-lived life.

She is the youngest daughter of Steve and Maggie Procell Remedies. Her siblings are Henry, Louis, Frank, Louise, and Steve Jr.

Growing up she enjoyed going to the movies with her mother and her niece Annie Ruth. The cost of a movie was 10 cents at a time. The love of reading was another pastime she enjoyed when not doing her chores expected of farm life.

She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she never missed a mass or stations of the cross. The only transportation was a local school bus that everyone who lived nearby could ride. In the later years, transportation was provided by Henry Remedies, who drove a work bus that allowed anyone a ride to church.

Get It Growing: Try starting plants from seeds

Containers

, such as these cell packs, should be clean
and sturdy, have drainage holes and fit into the space available for growing the young plants. Photo by Rick Bogren/LSU AgCenter

At some point, many gardeners discover seed catalogs offer a much greater selection of annual flowers and vegetables than can be found at the local nursery. To grow those wonderful plants, however, you must be able to grow your own transplants from seed.

Here’s how to do it.

Containers for sowing seeds

Containers should be clean and sturdy, have drainage holes and fit into the space available for growing the young plants.

Seeds may be planted thickly into plastic flats, trays, pots or other handy containers for later transplanting into smaller individual containers. Starting seeds this way initially saves space but involves additional labor transplanting the young seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough.

Stopping Patton

Addison’s Store was located right in the midst of the maneuver battle at Mount Carmel.

During the famous Louisiana Maneuvers of 1941, these training maneuvers were broken down to Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 ran from September 15 to September 19, 1941, and Phase 2 ran from September 24 to September 28, 1941.

During Phase 1 General George S. Patton and his 2nd Armored Division were assigned to the Red Second army commanded by General Ben Lear. Early on the morning of September 15 Patton and his troops attacked across the Red River westward toward Fort Jesup and Many, La. from the area near Winnfield, Montgomery, and Natchitoches. Patton’s armored units had to be stopped. But how could they be stopped and just where would the Blue 3rd Army stop him?

General Patton had been ordered to attack westward and then turn south-southeast in an attempt to push the Blue Army back. The goal of these armored attacks were to hit hard and fast and move in and capture the town of Leesville and Camp Polk, thus winning the maneuver battle for Phase
