The 200th anniversary of Sabine Parish and other western parishes becoming part of the State of Louisiana is being launched November 9-13 with a Bayou Renegade Rally for bikers. The first historical event will be held at Ft. Jesup in February.

The Sabine Parish Tourist Commission is working to develop a strong heritage/historical/ cultural tourism draw for tourists to the area and region. Other parishes sharing the same history and part of the tourism initiative for the celebration of No Man’s Land are Desoto, Natchitoches, Vernon, Beauregard, Allen, Calcasieu, and Cameron.

Scott Gandy, formerly of Many, turned himself into Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office (NPSO) detectives last week after being wanted in connection with the illegal use of a Natchitoches company’s credit card.

He is charged with 109-counts of illegal transmission of monetary funds over $16,000. The warrant was signed by a Tenth Judicial Court Judge A release stated that detectives had talked with Gandy on three occasions by phone and asked him to come in to speak with them. Gandy never appeared, which led to his being entered into the National Crime Information Center as a wanted person.

The 0-8 Lakeview Gators were no match for the Many Tigers during their game at John Curtis Tiger Stadium in Many on October 19.

The problems for Lakeview were apparent from the start. After taking the initial kickoff a Gator was upended at the 27-yard line, beginning their first offensive series of the night. Shortly after an illegal procedure penalty against Lakeview, it was Myron Warren, who has been receiving lots of interest from large Division 1 colleges after opening up his recruiting again, dropped the quarterback with a huge tackle.

The Gators were forced to punt, giving the Tigers fantastic field position due to a horse collar tackle, which added 15 on to the initial return.

The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts’s (LSMSA) class of 2018 posted a composite score of 29.2 on the national college admissions and placement test, far exceeding state average ACT scores.

This score ties with class of 2015 and class of 2016’s scores as the highest composite ACT score in the school’s history.

It was reported that the state’s average composite score was 19.2, a decrease from last year’s score of 19.5.

“State levels keep going down while our levels keep going up,” said LSMSA’s Executive Director Steven Horton. “That says a lot!”

The ACT is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being the highest possible score. Students also receive scores in four individual testing areas, which are combined for the composite score. The individual testing areas are English, mathematics, reading and science.

Gary Moore won the Many Bass Club’s October tournament with a five fish stringer weighing 12.27 pounds.

Moore caught his fish in the mid lake area using a sinko and worm.

George Herr is the second place finisher with a three-fish stringer weighing 10.27 pounds. Josh McPhearson is the third place champ with a three-fish stringer weighing 9.65 pounds. Herr also claims big bass honors with a 7.12 pound lunker.

After the long, hot summer, Autumn made her way to Sabine Parish with rain, chilly temperatures and dreary days. However, it was a relief from the muggy summer season, which seemed to last forever.

Welcome Autumn in October. Lots of ragweed on the roadsides and pastures. Achoo!!

Football for the Many Tigers is underway with big wins for Head Coach Jess Curtis and the team. Will this be the year that the Tigers take a trip to the Superdome in New Orleans. Methinks, it is!!

Fall break is over and the students are back in school.

Last week, a little neighbor girl, Ava, pedaled her bike up the driveway and asked, “What are you and Mr. Kenneth doing for fall break?” I assume she was under the impression that everyone got off for fall break!!! We looked at each other and grinned. No kids…… little work….and lots to do around the house.

RAMBLING AROUND

I looked over some old files and remembered the old days when all Democrats were not so far to the left, (known as Conservative Democrats). They would vote Democrat or Republican. I ran across a few comments from former U.S. Senator J. Bennet Johnston, a Democrat from Shreveport. A question was asked to him about the recent Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanagh. He stated that he thought Kavanagh should be confirmed. He said he has shown himself to be a good lawyer and has a good judicial temperament. From a Democrat standpoint, elections have consequences. He is not the guy the Democrats would have put in if they had the opportunity, but GOP won the election, made the nomination, and he needed to be confirm.

A celebration of the life of Elsie Mae Sibley Carter was held at Word of Truth Church in Many October 23. She was born into this world on August 29, 1931, the daughter of Ellis Kirkland Sibley and Bessie Wilson Sibley, and entered into her eternal rest with Jesus on October 20, 2018 at 87 years of age. Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 68 years, Jack Carter; sister, Frankie Piscitelli of Albuquerque, New Mexico; children, Mike Carter and wife, Cindy, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Carolyn Ricks and husband, Hanan, of Many, Jeffery Carter and wife, Lori, of Roswell, Georgia, and Ginger Dugas and husband, Glenn, of Lafayette; grandchildren, Jacque Ricks Thurman, Jimmy Ricks, Kathy Carter Gibbons, the Rev. David Carter, Amanda Carter and Travis Carter; great-grandchildren, Ty and Brooke Thurman, Sophie and Carter Gibbons; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Margie Louise Brooks Cooper, 82, of Florien, were held October 22 at Warren Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Sandifer officiating. Burial followed in the Florien Cemetery. She was born Monday, October 5, 1936 in Sabine Parish, and she passed away Friday, October 19, 2018 in Many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Lee Cooper; parents, Johnnie and Lula “Lewing” Brooks; brother, James Brooks; and son-in-law, Buddy Brown. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Louella Cooper Brown of Florien, and Bobbie Gail Cooper and companion, Paul, of Florien; brother, George Brooks and wife, Gail, of Keller, Texas; sisters, Charlene Brooks Sandifer and husband, Doyle, of Fisher, and Ann Brooks Randolph of Many; grandchildren, Dale Bridges and wife, Alicia of Florien, Tonia Bridges Self of Many, and Clint Bridges of Nashville, Kansas; 10 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Myrtie Marie Stewart Lee, 94, gently passed from this life surrounded by family on October 14, 2018, at her home in West Fork, Arkansas. She was born into a loving Christian home to Clarence and Leona Corley Stewart on September 30, 1924, in Cenchrea Community near Florien, and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. She married Clifton Lee in 1941. They moved to Jackson, Mississippi, and lived there until they moved to New Orleans for several years before returning to Many. Clifton was in the Navy during WWII. Marie and baby Victor travelled to join Clifton when he was in port, riding the train to San Diego and Norfolk, Virginia. Marie began attending the Cenchrea Church of the Nazarene as a baby. She continued her faithful Christian walk wherever she lived. She was a member of the Many Church of the Nazarene and the Bethany First Church of Nazarene. Marie was a joyful, prayerful, Christian woman all her life. Her family and friends loved that she laughed and smiled readily.
