Louisiana State University has announced students named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2018 semester.

Students named to the list must have grade point averages of 3.5 to 3.99 in at least 15 credit hours.

Laura C. Spann of Pleasant Hill was named from the College of Human Sciences and Education.

This was a pretty nice weekend as far as the weather goes for a late year fishing tournament such as the first annual Mike & Tony Best 6 shootout tournament among the best 6 fishermen,

Mikey Woods come in 1st place with 28.23 for a two-day total and Tim Oxley won the big bass honors for the Best 6 tournament with 6.37 pounds. Shannon Thibodeaux came in first in the TBBC with 14.56 pounds, and Tony Sattler came in second with 14.10 pounds and he also had big bass for the club with a 4.45 pounder.

Many Elementary is proud of their Students of the Week, especially during the season where every child has the Christmas break on their mind.

For the week of December 10, the following students were named to the list:

Joseph Dale, Kameron Rockingham, Spencer Sepulvado, Camille Miller, Morgan Garner, Brysen Bloodsworth, Maitlyn Knippers, and Braylan Alford were named as the Pre-K students.

Kindergarten Students of the Week were Nickolas Rivers, Willow McDonald, Stella McElwee, Layla Waltz, and Dulce Cabrera.

The first graders were Samuel Holbert, Charles Jackson, Zaya Thomas, Zane Ebarb, David Harris, and Kemarious Johnson.

Robert B. Caldwell Jr. of Many has completed his Ph.D. with a 4.0 in coursework from the University of Texas in Arlington.

He recently completed the doctorate in transatlantic history with comprehensive fields of migration history, revolutions, cartographic history and the history of exploration and “discovery.” His research involves history of cartography, ethnohistory, foodways, colonialism and imperialism, and Native American and Indigenous Studies.

He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Indians in their Proper Place: Culture Areas, Linguistic Stocks, and the Genealogy of a Map” in August of 2018. The dissertation explores 150 years of thematic maps of American Indian homelands, languages, and culture.

The 31^st annual Memorial Tree of Remembrance was hosted at Warren Meadows Funeral Home on Thursday night, December 13 at 6 p.m.

The annual event shows that the Warren Meadows Funeral Home family remembers each and every family served during the past year and grieves along with them.

Susan and Floyd Giblin began the beautiful program in 1987. Each year, a Christmas tree is decorated with ornaments, which includes the person’s name and date of death inscribed on them. Every person served by the funeral home is remembered with an ornament, that are distributed at the end of a service of remembrance.

“The holiday can be very difficult,” Susan Giblin noted. “We at Warren Meadows Funeral home understand this and have created a holiday keepsake that will recognize and pay tribute to that special person.”

Sabine Parish had quite the 2018. From decisions about the future of Toledo Bend to mere fun, a little bit of everything happens in our part of Louisiana. Each year, the Index does a wrap-up of the best of the previous year.

While most were still recovering from the Christmas season, others were off to a big start.

The Sabine Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution pledged to move forward in their service to the local community.

The smash blockbuster Wonder Woman played in the Many Community Center and was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended.

The Toledo Bend Lake Association announced their 2018-2019 gun raffle, which provides needed money that the organization uses to improve Toledo Bend.

Toledo Retirement and Rehabilitation Center provided a few pictures of their Christmas Party, which featured plenty of live music.

Way back in 1977 Randy Newman sang a song called “Short People”. He sang that “Short people had no reason to live”!! I feel obligated to stand up for all of us short people. How short is short, anyway?? The lyrics of the song are lyrically constructed as a prejudiced attack on all of us shorties. If it were produced in this day and time, someone would be “offended.” (I’m not!) Newman sings about short-tempered little people with stubby little fingers and nasty little feet. Nobody loves this song like Dean Lambert and nobody loves to sing it like Mike Morris!! I know because they always point me and every other short person at Bayou Crawfish when Mikey starts to sing the song. I really don’t mind… .I’ve been short my entire life. Mother used to say, “If you are short, you can dance with the short boys and the tall boys!” Worked for me and I danced away with them all!! I am proud to be a short person. I graduated fourth in my high school class of 129.

Funeral services for Mrs. Melissa Ann Campbell Rivers, 44, were held on Friday, November 23, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Zwolle. Officiating will be Father Timothy Hurd. Interment followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Zwolle.

Missy was born July 7, 1974 in Natchitoches, to Edward Campbell, Jr and JoAnn Moss Campbell and entered rest on November 19, 2018 in Houston, Texas. Missy was a loving wife, daughter, mother and sister.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, Delayne Rivers of Noble; her parents, JoAnn Moss Campbell and Edward Campbell, Jr. both of Many; son, Tyler Layne Rivers of Lake Charles; daughters, Emily Ann Guay Larche and husband, Landry of Lake Charles, Marlee Grace Rivers of Noble; sisters, Nancy Murphy and Russell, Mindy Campbell and Jason all of Many; and a host of other friends and family.

Mrs. Linda Lovelady funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Bayou Scie United Methodist Church, Zwolle. Rev. Richard Lehr, Rev. Ray Spiller, and Rev. Kenneth Leach were officiating. Interment followed at Bayou Scie Cemetery, Zwolle.

Linda was born August 3, 1949 in Many, to Charlie and Margaret Cook, and passed away on November 19, in Zwolle. Linda was a former bank teller where she met and helped a lot of customers; these individuals easily became friends of this sweet lady. She was a member of Bayou Scie United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Margaret Cook; her first husband, Gene Lehr, and her son, Jeremy Lehr.

Linda is survived by her husband, John Lovelady; son, Richard Lehr and wife, Melanie; son, Christopher Lehr; sister, Margaret Reed; brother, Gary Reed and wife Janie; brother, Johnny Reed. She also left behind nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Barbara Peterson, 83, of Many, were held on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Many with Rev. Gloria Youngblood officiating.

Barbara Peterson was born on Friday, August 9, 1935 in Sparkman, Arkansas. She passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018 in Shreveport. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Lee Richardson and Pauline (Robey) Richardson.

She is survived by her husband, Garland Peterson of Many; sons: Mike Tompkins of Shreveport, and Mark Tompkins of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren: Steven Tompkins, Christopher Tompkins and Nathan Tompkins; two great grandchildren: Beaux Tompkins and Davis Tompkins; along with a host of friends.
