Sabine, Natchitoches named certified Retire Louisiana Certified Retirement Community

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, along with the Louisiana Office of Tourism, are proud to announce that eight communities from across Louisiana are officially Louisiana Retirement Certified Areas. The Encore Louisiana Commission worked for over three months on naming these specific locations across the state that are now certified and focused on bringing retirees to enjoy their “encore” at life.

“These eight communities represent all of Louisiana and what we have to offer,” said Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser. “With nearly 76 million baby boomers nearing retirement in the coming years, many states are working to draw them to their areas, and we thought we should take advantage to not only grow tourism but help spur economic development.”

Alternative art, music show set for this weekend

Want something different to do on Saturday night? The Sabine CounterCulture Movement, that group of bliss-filled purveyors of good vibes, are coming together for their first ever audio and visual art extravaganza, which will be held on Saturday, March 31 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the historic Many Train Depot.

“I love the fact that we have so many talented artists in Sabine,” said Daniel Jones, co-host of the Sabine CounterCast, which is an internet-based podcast featuring art, music, activities, and geek/pop culture with a local twist. “I’m glad that the Depot Art Guild will allow us the use of their space to exhibit these young artists. This is absolutely unreal to several of the artists, who may not have received recognition otherwise.”

Vicente Micheli & Don Joaquin/Procella Crossing Historical Markers to be dedicated

The unveiling and dedication of two historical markers, Vicente Micheli and Don Joaquin/ Procella Crossing, will be held on Friday, April 6, at 3 p.m. in Lufkin, by the Texas Historical Commission and Angelina County Historical Commission. Both markers are located one quarter to half a mile south of the Angelina River on Highway 59.

Vicente Micheli, a native of Italy, was a prominent landowner and businessman in Angelina County and several other locations in Texas and Louisiana. He is believed to be one of, if not the first, Italian immigrant to permanently settle in Texas, and in 1810, received the first patented Spanish land grant to become Angelina County. He eventually settled in San Antonio, opening a mercantile store there, and referred to himself as “the merchant of Venice.” Over the decades the Micheli name has become Americanized or changed for various reasons but there are a multitude of his descendants.

Patchwork

by donna smith ammons

Sometimes I get myself in awful messes. Take last Sunday night for example.

I decided it was time to put my Christmas dishes away and bring out my gardening plates, bowls and salad plates. I store them in the tippy top shelf of my pantry in the kitchen.
