On the weekend of Saturday, May 24, Many High School joined 335 of the top high school quiz bowl teams at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Hilton Atlanta for the 2025 High School National Championship Tournament to determine who was the best.
For those unaware, Quiz Bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz Bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.
Many was one of six Louisiana teams competing at the national championship. And was captained by William Mains. He was joined by team members Jackson Hubley, Alison Loucious, Kaghan Miller, and Adelyn Penfield. The team was coached by Jacob and Sandra Heard.
“We have some great, young players and I wanted to test our team against the best and see where we stacked up,” Jacob Heard told the Index. “Unfortunately, we lost all of our preliminary games. Most schools that we played were from larger cities and had all upperclassman lineups.
Many finished the preliminary rounds with a 0-10 record. Their shot at the playoffs ended when they lost to Pensacola from Florida in round 12.
However, Jacob does point to a promising future for the team.
“While I was there, I did talk to some NAQT staff members and learned that they have a small school championship each year, and we qualify based on our enrollment,” he said. “The event will be in Chicago next year, so if we win our local tournament, we will go there instead.”
Any school named winner of the Sabine Parish Championship is eligible to attend as long as the school is willing to fundraise and sent them.
The tournament champion was the A team from Livingston High School of Livingston, New Jersey.
The 2025 High School National Championship Tournament’s field featured 336 teams from 37 states, the District of Columbia, and Guatemala.
