As the only national forest in Louisiana, Kisatchie holds a place near and dear to the hearts of many who live here, but many others don’t know where to begin in its vast expanse, which is located within seven central and northern parishes in the state. For this edition of the Sabineland Staycation series, which offers ideas for quick day trips close to Sabine, is concentrated solely upon the Kisatchie Bayou Campground area.

Nestled well within the confines of the national forest, the Kisatchie Bayou Campground is easily one of the most popular destinations to be had locally for the nature lover. It is also easily accessible for almost any type of vehicle, being located several miles down mostly- smooth dirt roads. The campground itself doesn’t offer any power whatsoever, so all of its numerous sites are primitive. However, there are vault toilets located quite centrally in the area, which makes it easier for families and those used to more developed camping.

Kisatchie Bayou runs directly through the campground, and each site has easy access to the water and the waterfalls running directly through the area. A personal favorite site is the sandbar at the end of the campground. While we were there on a weekday, there was truly minimum traffic at the site, so we were swimming alone. A few trickled others in and out but didn’t stay long. Also, compared to a month ago following heavy rains, the water is much more manageable for swimming, but less so for kayaking. The campground is usually more populated on the weekend, especially during these peak vacation month times.

Swimming isn’t the only recreation available in the area, as numerous trails for hiking, ATV, and horses are close by and easily accessible.
