The Sabine High School campus located at 850 Highland Ave. in Many served Sabine Parish Public Schools as the location for Many Junior High School from 19702001. Before serving as MJHS, the school educated African American students from 1958-1970.
In 1970, the schools in Sabine Parish Public Schools were desegregated based on a 1954 Supreme Court case ruling of Brown vs Board of Education stating that schools throughout the United States could no longer be segregated, but the school population including teachers had to be combined to teach all children.
In 2018, the campus that was once named Sabine High School was declared a historic site by the Department of Interior – National Park Service. Through grant funding provided by the NPS, Department of Interior – History of Equal Rights, the Sabine High School site received funds to begin the rehab process of the campus to become a multipurpose community center serving the residents of Sabine Parish and Northwest Louisiana— a new community and place of inclusion.
On August 19, the Sabine High School Project held its groundbreaking ceremony to begin Phase 1 to rehab the gymnasium and weatherize the remaining buildings located on the campus of Sabine High School. The groundbreaking ceremony was very well attended. State and local politicians were in attendance along with alumni, family, friends of Sabine High School who came from near and far. SHSRP (Sabine High School Revitalization Project) Management Group, Inc. was delighted to have former teachers that taught from 1958-1970 at Sabine High School in attendance.
The groundbreaking ceremony was sponsored by the National Park Service—Department of Interior through grant funding allocated under the History of Equal Rights. Phase 1 of the rehab project is tentatively set to be completed by late Spring, 2024.
