The Florien Police Department has arrested Tarjarez White, 29, a resident of Florien, and charged him with two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.
This is in response to two pit bulls seized a few weeks ago when they were found chained up without food or water. Both dogs were emaciated and near death. They were seized and brought to the Sabine Animal Shelter.
White is also charged with flight from an officer and failure to register as a sex offender.
White bonded after his arrest. Bond for the animal cruelty charges is set at $5000. It is set at $10,000 for the other charges.
Florien Detective Summer Carter is credited with handling the investigation and locating White to arrest him.
The two dogs, named Lucy and Lucky, are now housed at the Sabine Animal Shelter, where they are receiving both medical and socializing attention. According to Shelter Manager Lisa Butler, the dogs are doing well and have gained more than seven pounds since they’ve been at the shelter. She emphasized that they still have a long way to go toward complete recovery.
However, both dogs are heartworm positive and Lucky has had at least two seizures since he’s been rescued. Dr. Brett Courtney suspects that the seizures are related to the heartworms. Both dogs will be spayed and neutered and receive heartworm treatment when they are strong enough to undergo these procedures.
Jeff Dorson, president of the Louisiana Humane Society, has taken a great interest in the plight of Lucy and Lucky and has raised approximately $2100,00 in donations to help pay for their medical expenses. Dorson has also sent news releases about the dogs to news media around the state. KTBS in Shreveport and KALB in Alexandria are just two media outlets that have carried the story.
If you are interested in making a donation to help these dogs, you may mail a donation to the Sabine Animal Shelter at 550 McDonald Drive, Many 71449. Please indicate on the check that the donation is for the care of Lucy and Lucky, the two abused pit bulls.
