St. Denis Fest is promising something different for Natchitoches and has filled the lineup with a variety of local musicians who play outside of the norm, much like the two business owners who are seeing their vision for something a tad different for the town become reality.
The festival is set for September 10 and will run from 10 a.m. till on St. Denis Street in Natchitoches. It is designed as a way to have music, art, food, and a festive environment while showcasing businesses that are just off the beaten path in Natchitoches.
“There’s a lot of variety in the lineup and we feel like there’s something for everyone at St. Denis Fest,” said Mike Morton, owner of Laughing Sam’s Discs. “Each person on the lineup represents a local talent. We want to create buzz and excitement for the businesses outside of Front Street, and what better way to do that than with a grassroots festival where people can have fun, shop, listen to music, and spend a little time with us.” The lineup, released over the weekend, con- sists of Bob Tooke, Derrick McLen don, Cole Stephens, Swint Road, Andrew Dougan, Jeremy Rials, and Dan Chilwell. Tooke is a resident of the Zwolle area and performs in a folksy rockabilly style. McLendon of Sabine Parish is well known in this area and throughout Texas for his brand of red dirt country music. Cole Stephens is the grandson of Frances and the late Rodney Hopkins of Many and is making a name for himself performing in the Nacogdoches area. Seth Wimberly of Swint Road is a Laughing Sam’s regular and has held some jam sessions in the store. Andrew Dougan is a space rock specialist. Jeremy Rials is an authority on Cajun style music and will DJ a variety of American tunes centered in the 1900s. Dan Chilwell of Many has over two decades of experience playing house music and will bring that expertise to get the crowd grooving to the sounds of underground dance music.
A number of artists have been confirmed for the festival and will be present on the day of offering a variety of wares. Morton states that there will also be a food truck on site with barbecue, burgers, and hot dogs. Beer will also be available for those of age who choose to drink.
“We want this festival to let people know we’re here,” said Henry Taylor, owner of Tres Bien antiques.
Both owners want this to be the start of something bigger for Natchitoches and the smaller communities. Follow them on Facebook for more information.
