Fort Jesup State Historic Site celebrated its bicentennial celebration on February 25, 2022. The fort was established by Zachary Taylor in 1822. It is situated between Natchitoches, the oldest city in the Louisiana Purchase and Toledo Bend. The fort was built to secure the western border of the U. S. frontier between the United States and Spain.
Even though the weather was not at its best, over 350 dignitaries including Lt. Governor of Louisiana Billy Nungesser, re-enactors and Living History volunteers, and visitors joined together for the celebration.
The Fort Jesup Society of the Children of the American Revolution was a vital part of the activities. Leading school groups from Living History Stations to the next stop were Allie Tarver and Hannah Flynn. They also presented the thank you to the Lt. Governor. Nicholas Tarver led the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening ceremonies and accepted the thank you to the Fort Jesup Society for their help. Alison Russell worked the “country store” selling shirts, maps, and DVDs. The members had an eventful day helping with all the activities.
