Sonnier claims first place at Many Bass Club’s May tourney

Michael Sonnier won 1st place with 13.09 pounds and had big fish weighing 5.35 pounds.

The Many Bass Club’s 2021 May Tournament was held May 8 and 9 on Toledo Bend. The weather was pre-frontal and windy with high, bright skies, and warming days. Sunday, like last month proved to be the better day for fishing, with the three anglers that fished Sunday taking the top three positions as well as the big fish of the tournament.

Many Bass Club holds April tournament

Many Bass Club holds April tournament

Johnny Flowers won 1st place with 13.21 pounds.

The Many Bass Club’s 2021 April Tournament was held April 10 and 11, on Toledo Bend. The weather was much like last month’s tournament; post frontal conditions with high bright skies, cool nights and warming days. Most of the fish caught in the tournament were post spawners but several bedding fish were weighed in. The post frontal/post spawn conditions were challenging for the anglers but several of them were able to catch nice limits in spite of the conditions. The top three anglers all fished Sunday and the bite was definitely better for all of the anglers that chose to fish Sunday rather than Saturday.

Ebarb High School’s historic season ended with the Ebarb Mighty Rebels as Class C State Runner-Up, a senior, Zach Parrie, selected as Class C Boys Player of the Year, and Coach Taylor Lee voted Class C Boys Coach of the Year by a panel from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Coach Lee and the Ebarb Mighty Rebels recently played in the Class C state championship game in Lake Charles. It was Lee’s first trip to LHSAA’s Marsh Madness with the EHS Rebels and the team’s first appearance in the title game since 1970, when they were led by EHS legends Greg Procell and Walter “Tootsie Roll” Meshell. In recognition of this historic playoff run, Lee was named the LSWA Class C Boys Coach of the Year. His second award in that category, after also leading the Ebarb Lady Rebels to their first state appearance in 2019.

The second quarter proved to be costly for Florien.

For the second straight season, the Lady Blackcats’ year ends in the Class B semifinals to Fairview as they lost, 61-45.

“It was a good game between two good teams,” Florien coach Dewain Strother said. “Their defense just wore us down and kept us out of our rhythm.”

The Lady Cats shot 3o percent from the floor and committed 23 turnovers but struggled in the second quarter by hitting 3 of 15 shots.
