Gary Bass

Funeral services for Gary Gearl Bass, 63, of Many were held April 25 at Pendleton Assembly of God with the Reverends Daniel Davis and Al Crane officiating. Burial followed in the Pendleton Assembly of God Cemetery.He was born on Sunday, July 12, 1953 in Zwolle. He passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Sabine Medical Center in Many.He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Bass and Mavis Cryer Bass; brother, Herman Bass; and his son, Joshua David Bass.He is survived by his wife, Myra Bass of Many; daughter, Martha Bass Snider and husband, Joel Snider, of Many; son, Anthony Gary Bass and wife, Crystal Bass, of Many; brother, Carry Bass and wife, Annette Bass, of Magnolia, Texas; sister, Helen Bass Dollar and husband, Mike Dollar, of West Monroe; grandchildren, Leo Bass, Kyleigh Bass, Ayden Bass, Tinley Bass, Jayme French and Tre French; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.Pallbearers were Chris White, Jason Bass, J.D.

Brad DeCoux

Bradley Abel DeCoux has risen to the mind of God. Brad was born the son of A.J. “Boots” DeCoux and Willie Dell Landry DeCoux at St. Patrick Hospital, Lake Charles on November 23, 1954, and died at 7:34 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017.He is survived by his sister, Cynthia DeCoux Stone, and her husband, Walter Stone.Brad was a graduate of Our Lady’s School; The Governor’s Program for Gifted Children; W.W. Lewis Junior High School; Sulphur High School in 1972 and Louisiana State University with a B.S. in 1976.He was the operator of Fap’s Kitchen in Baton Rouge; Statewide Purchasing Agent in Louisiana Governor’s Office, Division of Administration; National Manager of Right of Way and Claims Division of Conoco, Inc. and Real Estate Broker with Lake Country Realty on Toledo Bend Reservoir.Brad managed to survive being robbed and shot in the head while picking his mother up at the New Orleans Amtrack station in 1994.

Johnnie Curtis

Johnnie Curtis, 74, passed away April 14, 2017 at St. Francis Cabrini. A memorial service was held April 21 at Shamrock Church in Robeline.He was born April 23, 1942, in Hornbeck. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Curtis; brother, T.E; sister, Jewell Haute; three daughters and one son, Billy Curtis of Natchez, Kala Philips of Leesville, Carla Bennett of Simpson and Bobbi Curtis of Robeline; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Dutton Curtis and Emiline Jett Curtis of Hornbeck, as well as a granddaughter, Danielle Alexandra Phillips of Robeline.Pap Paw will be greatly missed by numerous family and friends. Finally fishing at the everlasting river.

Graveside services for Vera Key Masters, 95, of Plainview Community were held April 25 at New Kisatchie Cemetery with the Rev. Dean Crittenden officiating. She was born on Sunday, February 19, 1922 in Kisatchie and passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Spring Lake Guest Care in Shreveport.She was a member of Plainview Baptist Church and lived many years in Plainview Community before moving to Shreveport in 1998.She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar E. Masters; parents, Caleb Key and Ludie Dowden Key; and sister, Norma Key McGlasson. She is survived by her niece, Kathy McGlasson Brewer and husband, Karl of Midland, Texas; nephew, Travis L. Althia “Mickey” Veuleman

Funeral services honoring the life of Althia “Mickey” Veuleman, 84, of Pelican were held April 10 at Wallace Baptist Church in Pelican with Dr. Jeff Jinks, and the Reverends Joe Thibeau and James Moore officiating. Burial followed at Spring Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.Mickey was born on March 13, 1933 to Earl P. and Myrtice Brown and entered into rest on April 8, 2017.Preceding her in death were her husband, Ray D. Veuleman; parents, Earl P. and Myrtice Brown; sons, Michael Ray Veuleman, and Donald Jeffery Veuleman; daughter, Cynthia Kay Veuleman; sister, Lois Brown Campbell; and son-in-law, Roger D. Jennings.Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, James R.

Dwight “Buddy” Nelms

Dwight “Buddy” Alburn Nelms, 71, of Hornbeck departed this world after a short courageous battle with cancer in the Sabine Retirement Center in Many on April 4, 2017. Dwight had just moved back to Hornbeck to be near family after having lived in Ocala, Florida for many years. He would have been 72 on April 23. A memorial of his life was held April 9 at First Baptist Church in Hornbeck. Dr. Jack Bell officiated. Burial of the cremains will be held at Mitchell Cemetery at Crystal Springs Baptist Church in Anacoco at a later date. Dwight was the youngest of 10 children born to the late Floyd Marshal Nelms and Agnes Molina VanVeckhoven Nelms in Hornbeck on April 23, 1945. He graduated from Hornbeck High School in 1964. After graduation he entered the air force. Upon leaving the air force, Dwight became a very successful store manager and made that his career until retiring.

Mary Moats

Mary Ann Evans Moats, 78, of Pensacola, Florida passed away on March 27, 2017 peacefully and surrounded by family after an 18-year battle with Cancer.Born, March 4, 1939 in Toro, she was the daughter of Hayden Evans and Anne B. Byrd. She married her husband of 59 years, Bill Moats on June 27, 1957 and they began a life as a military family. While she lived many places over her life, she always considered Hornbeck home.She is survived by her husband, Bill; son and spouse, Bill Jr. and Samantha Moats; grand-daughters, Molly Moats and Madeline Guilfoyle and husband, Bob Guilfoyle; great grandson Bobby Guilfoyle; loving sisters-in-law, Freddie Evans, Gloria Evans, Barbara Parker; and numerous nieces and nephews that she adored and loved dearly.She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Billy Jay, Benny, Haywood, Carlton and Lynn Edward; and sister, Shirley Evans Shackleford.She was a dedicated Christian and member of the Baptist faith.

Funeral Services for Evelyn Edith Garcie, 94, of Keithville, were held April 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Richard Norsworthy officiating. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Cemetery.She was born on Thursday, August 31, 1922 in Bloomfield, Montana. She passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Grace Home in Shreveport.She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Mable Kinch Ackerman; husband, Roy Garcie; sons, Rodney Garcie and Johnny Garcie; and sisters, Ella Johnson and Beverly Holman.She started her medical career in 1946 at the Sabine Clinic in Zwolle until its closing in 1969. She then started working with Dr. Donald Taylor in Converse until the hospital closed. From there she went to work with Dr. Poimbeuf in Pleasant Hill until he died. After-wards, she worked again with Dr. Taylor who was now in Mansfield. She worked in several different nursing homes in Mansfield and Shreveport. She enjoyed being in the health care industry until she retired.

Alvin Louis Martinez came into this world Saturday, October 28, 1961, and departed it Thursday, April 13, 2017, at the age of 55.He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosie Sepulvado and Wilson Martinez.Survivors include his twin sons, Landon Sholin and wife, Jessica, of Manhatten, Kansas and Chad Sholin of W. Springfield, Massachusetts; daughter, Nicole Alford of Many; grandsons, Bryce Sholin, Bentley Mitchell, Cole Mitchell and Elliott Sholin; brothers, Sylvester Martinez and wife, Arlene, and Larry Martinez and wife, Irma, all of Zwolle; sister, Charlotte Mobley of Shreveport; fiancée, Audrey Wooley, of Zwolle; nephews, Jason Martinez and Brad Mobley; nieces, Lisa Malmay Parker, Amy Martinez Garcie and Debra Martinez Sepulvado; Anthony Longoria, his life long friend, and his sidekick of 13 years, Gizzy.Alvin began a career in the oil field at an early age and continued until the onset of his illness. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially of large turtles.

Burial followed in the Parrot Cemetery. She was born on Tuesday, May 19, 1936 in Germany and passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Sabine Retirement & Rehabilitation Center in Many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. McComic; father, Kirt Pheifle; and mother, Anna Pheifle. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Rivers of Zwolle; son, Darren McComic and wife, Debbie of Zwolle; sister, Gerda Carlson and husband, Pete, of Florida; granddaughter, Ashley Falcon; nieces: Patricia Henry and husband, Don, of Minnesota and Cindy Parri and husband, Tony, of Florida; along with a host of friends, family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were James “Bo-Bo” McComic, Timothy McComic, Justin McComic, Phillip McComic, Scott Crooks, Greg Crooks and Carl Stephens.
