On November 22 at around 2:30 a.m., a call was placed to the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Department reporting a severe one-vehicle accident with injuries on Marin Luther King Jr. Drive in Many.

March election qualifying set

Candidate qualifying for the March 5, 2016 Primary Election will be held in the office of the Sabine parish Clerk of Court beginning on Wednesday, December 2 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and will run through December 4, closing at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The clerk will hold qualifying for Democratic & Republican State Central Committee Members, Democratic & Republican Parish Executive Committee Members, Florien Mayor, Chief of Police and Aldermen (3).

Many Junior High pays tribute to veterans

On Wednesday, November 11, Many Junior High School held their annual Veterans Day program. The administration, teachers, support staff, and students set aside this day each year to honor and thank all men and women who are serving or have served in the military. Numerous veterans, parents, and visitors filled the banner decorated gymnasium to express appreciation and remembrance. Students gave a warm welcome to keynote speaker veteran Howard Pennington as he shared his experiences and love of his country.

A Christmas Carol is coming

Director Mary Bozeman is pleased that the cast of this year’s “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens will include the wonderful Jim Quayhagen (Saturday, December 5, at 7 p.m.) as Scrooge on Saturday, December 5 at 7 p.m., the role he portrayed in the first production of the show. He will be double cast with Jim Hyde on December 6 at 2 p.m., who has delighted audiences in the role in recent years.

Choctaw-Apache Tribe honors veterans

Ebarb honored veterans at the Choctaw Apache Tribal Veterans Pow Wow that was held on Friday, November 6 at the tribal grounds. Several family members of our veterans were present to receive the Louisiana Medal of Honor that is issued by the state to recognize living and deceased veterans. In addition to the presentation of the Medal of Honor to veterans and families Chief Thomas Rivers also awarded all veterans in attendance a gift from the tribe.

Death claims James A. “Buddy” Veuleman, Nov. 4

Sabine Parish School Board President James A. “Buddy” Veuleman died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 4 at Oschners Hospital in New Orleans, where he had been a patient for over a week. He was feeling better and was looking forward to returning to his home, when he suffered a massive stroke Wednesday afternoon. Generous in life, he was also generous in death by donating his corneas to someone who would need them.

Death of Garland Anthony shocks, saddens community

Marion Garland Anthony, 73, of Florien died unexpectedly the morning of Friday, November 6 at Sabine Medical Center in Many after being stricken at his home. He apparently suffered a massive heart attack. Anthony was Executive Director of the Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce.

Holiday events kick-off with Christmas Shoppe, luminaries

Christmas is almost here and the Many Christmas Parade Committee, which is also hosting ‘Tis the Season in Sabineland, has planned a variety of events getting underway this week. Beginning Thursday, November 19, an Old Fashioned Christmas Shoppe will open at the Many Depot from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. through Saturday, November 21. The Sabine Art Guild will be displaying original artwork, prints and other items for sale.

Thanksgiving closure announced

The office of The Sabine Index will be closed on November 26 to let the employees celebrate Thanksgiving with their family. Because of the holiday, the Index will go to press on November 20 for the Thanksgiving edition. All deadlines will be 5 p.m. on the November 19 in order to have it run in the Thanksgiving edition. Burning the piney woods

Wildfires in the Northwestern U.S. recently took the lives of three firefighters and destroyed many homes. These tragedies might cause a person to be uncomfortable with the idea of burning the woods. However, it is important to understand the benefits of a prescribed burn and the difference between a wildfire and a prescribed or “controlled” burn.
