The Willie Stewart God Bless America will not be performed on July 4. Faced with decision to limit attendance to only 50%, we reluctantly decided to postpone this patriotic concert until a later date when everyone could safely attend.

The decision to postpone was a joint decision between Willie Stewart, Many Mayor Ken Freeman and Cultural District Chairperson Mary Brocato.

Salter recalls several close calls of World War II

James Q. Salter, formerly of Zwolle had a number of close calls while performing his patriotic duty during World War II. Thankfully, none of the B-29 bombers of which he was a crew member went down.

Salter recalls several close calls of World War II

Pictured are B-29 bombers performing a bombing run during World War II.

(Editor’s Note: James Q. Salter is a beloved local historian and writer who has contributed much to our local communities. He asked that we print his recollections of serving during World War II.)

In the last article I related some close calls through our 21 st mission of July 9. This conclusion to the article chronicles close calls for the completion of our tour of 32 missions, which consisted of 23 bombing missions, seven mining missions, and two air-sea rescue missions.

On one of our mining missions our light engineer was ill and could not fly. The group engineer was assigned to us for that mission. He almost got all of us killed by miscalculating fuel consumption.

Louisiana sees COVID-19 cases rise in several regions

Louisiana sees COVID-19 cases rise in several regions

(The Center Square) – Three regions of Louisiana have seen an increase of COVID-19 cases in recent days even as the amount of testing has leveled off, state officials said Thursday.

Gov. John Bel Edwards is expected to announce Monday whether the state will move into the next phase of loosening restrictions meant to control the spread of the new coronavirus. Edwards didn’t say Thursday if he was leaning toward moving into the next phase, or whether he would consider issuing different rules for different regions.

But statistics Dr. Alex Billioux with the state Office of Public Health presented suggest the southwest, Acadiana and central regions of the state would not meet federal guidelines to further reopen. Edwards said he had not seen any indication that COVID cases will overwhelm health care capacity in any region of the state, which had been a concern when Louisiana was among the world leaders in case growth.

Vincent Korb of Many gives a thumbs up to the TBLA/Sabine SWCD Fish Fest at the weigh in line.

It’s always great to be back at Toledo Bend Lake at Cypress Bend Park to enjoy the fisherman’s paradise. With the world-wide Corona virus pandemic, it wasn’t a sure thing if the eleventh annual Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) and the Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Fish Fest could be held. Saturday, June 6, 2020 was the very first day a group fishing tournament could become reality because of COVID-19. Youth fishermen gathered early to cast a rod for the largest bass, bream, catfish, white perch (crappie), turtle, and any other freshwater fish off the banks of Cypress Bend Park. TBLA President, Ricky Yeldell heads the non-profit organization formed by volunteers dedicated to improving the quality of fishing on Toledo Bend. Fishermen have been flocking to the lake where no social distancing is needed in your own boat
