In years past Negreet High School has enjoyed hosting and honoring veterans on campus with a ceremony and a meal. Due to COVID restrictions on campus visitors this year, the school honored veterans in a driveby manner, presenting them with a certificate of appreciation and a pin. A video showcasing local veterans was posted online.

(The Center Square) – A Baton Rouge-based district judge on Thursday ruled unconstitutional a state law allowing one chamber of the Legislature to overturn a governor’s emergency order, setting the stage for an appeal.

Judge William Morvant with the 19th Judicial District said he wished the case could have skipped state court and gone straight to the Louisiana Supreme Court, since the justices will be the final arbiters.

Shortly before the Legislature’s recent special session ended, 65 of the 68 Republicans in the state House of Representatives signed a petition to suspend the governor’s COVID-19 emergency order for seven days. They were doing so under an obscure law that has never been tested in court that allows one chamber to end a state of emergency by petition.

The Town of Many Christmas Committee has selected the honorees for the 2020 Christmas Parade on Dec.19.

Adrianna Lea Payne, the daughter of Andrea Payne and granddaughter of Andy and Anna Payne, is the 2020 Sabine Parish Rising Star.

Adrianna is 16 and a junior at Negreet High School. She will graduate in May 2022.She is a proud Negreet Indian playing on both the Lady Indian basketball team and softball team.

Adrianna maintains a 4.0 grade point average and has already earned many college credits by taking dual enrollment classes. She plans to attend Louisiana State University and major in education.

(The Center Square) – U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy has been reelected to a second term, easily winning outright in the first round against 14 challengers and avoiding a runoff.

Meanwhile, every Louisiana incumbent in the U.S. House of Representatives secured an early victory Tuesday night by cracking the 50 percent threshold needed to win in the first round, with one House race left to be decided in December.

As a Republican incumbent in a red state, Cassidy was heavily favored to win. The only question for his campaign in Tuesday’s nonpartisan open primary, in which every candidate competes on the same ballot regardless of party, was whether he would get more than 50 percent of the vote and avoid facing the second-place finisher next month.

Presidential Race

Despite the count for president continuing in several battleground states, it is becoming more and more clear that Joe Biden will defeat President Donald Trump and assume his office in January.

Hours before the Index’s early press deadline on Friday, November 6, Biden pulled ahead in the battleground states of Georgia and Pennsylvania, while leading in the states of Arizona and Nevada.

Trump’s path to victory has narrowed considerably, with his election team filing a number of lawsuits to try and deny votes being counted.

As the paper went to press, Fox News had Biden ahead in the electoral college with 264 to Trump’s 214. Biden was also leading the popular election with 73,708,172 votes for 50.5 percent of all votes being cast, while Trump had 47.8 percent of all votes cast, or 69,771,277.

Pat Getschel, Zwolle-Ebarb VFW Auxiliary president for 2019-2020, won the top spot in membership enrollment for the second year in the state of Louisiana. The award was based on the personal enrollment of 23 new members.

Matthew Hoy Edgar, 24, of Hemphill, Texas has been arraigned on one count of first degree felony murder of 19-year-old Livyee Lewis, daughter of Heath Lewis and Darci Bass.

He was implicated in connection with the death following an investigation by the Sabine County Sheriff’s Offce and Texas Rangers.

Northwestern State University will celebrate Native American Heritage Month by screening indigenous-made films on Thursdays in November. Locations vary within the Student Union. Refreshments will be served at the Nov. 19 screening. COVID protocols will be strictly enforced.

“Reel Injuns” explores (mis)-portrayals of Native people in historical and contemporary films. With wry humor, the film examines how these portrayals affect Native people. It screens Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Mini Ballroom on the building’s first floor.

The Louisiana Farm to School Program has launched a survey seeking information on how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting farmers who sell food products.

“We want to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting farm production, market channels, and finances,” said Johannah Frelier, manager of the program.
