The month-long Sabine Parish Trash Bash planned by the Sabine Leaders Against Litter, March 27-April 24, is an opportunity to assist and encourage residents, businesses, churches, schools, sport teams, and civic groups to participate in working toward a more positive goal of a “clean Sabine” and the improvement in the quality of our everyday lives. A 4 week-long parish wide trash cleanup will give Sabine Parish communities time to get the deplorable conditions of some of our roadways, street, public areas, waterways, and communities cleaned up. Trash and litter along our highways and streets impact our lives and gives a negative impression for our residents and our community.

Litter is costly. In Louisiana, an estimated $40 million in taxpayer dollars are spent each year on litter removal, abatement, education and enforcement. It costs $11.5 billion every year to clean up litter in the U.S. according to a study conducted by Keep Louisiana Beautiful.

The latest campaign by the American Battlefield Trust to protect historic landscapes includes 20 acres at Mansfield, La., where an 1864 battle figured significantly in the larger strategies that characterized the final year of the American Civil War.

“There is simply no substitute for walking on the very ground where important history happened,” said Trust President David Duncan. “Protecting these landscapes ensures that future generations will always be able to explore and learn from our unique American battlefields.”

In the spring of 1864, Union forces launched an offensive known as the Red River Campaign. Its objective was to capture Louisiana’s Confederate capital at Shreveport and then open the gateway for Federal troops to enter Texas.

Join us for the 157th Anniversary of the Battle of Pleasant Hill with a festival & re-enactment from Friday, April 9 – Sunday, April 11, 2021. Re-enactments and activities will take place 3 miles north of Pleasant Hill at 23271 Hwy. 175, Pelican, LA.

This outstanding Civil War re-enactment portrays the historically recorded events of the battle with the help of more than 400 re-enactors. The town will commemorate the event with a parade, period ball, church service and open camp activities throughout the weekend. Re-enactments take place on Saturday, April 10th and Sunday April 11th at 2:00 pm. Entry fee is $5 per person (5 and under free). Parking is free!

Many Junior High was selected to receive the ExxonMobil 2020 Educational Alliance Grant.

It is funded by ExxonMobil and provided by Lott Oil & the Corner Market Exxon of Many. The $500 grant is intended to be used to focus on improvements in math and science.

(The Center Square) – Louisiana residents who work in a wide range of new job categories will be added Monday to the list of people eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccinations, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Thursday.

Edwards said the change likely will be the last expansion of eligibility before all residents at least 16 years old are eligible. He said he expects Louisiana will get to that point before the May 1 goal set by President Joe Biden.

Newly eligible job categories include higher education, food and agriculture, manufacturing, grocery stores, transportation, water and wastewater, energy, bank tellers, construction, clergy, information technology and communications, media, public safety, frontline government workers, family service workers, veterinarians, waste management, security and emergency preparedness.

The Sabine Parish Leaders Against Litter met on March 15, 2021, after not being able to meet for over a year due to the pandemic. The period of March 27 – April 24, 2021 was set to get the deplorable conditions of some of our roadways, streets, public areas, and communities cleaned up.

Sheriff Aaron Mitchell and his chief deputy, Brad Walker, were in attendance at the meeting. Sheriff Mitchell explained that Covid-19 had impacted the inmate work program and all inmate crews were kept in the detention center off work detail due to the pandemic. They began picking up trash along state highways a few weeks ago, but it will take about 10 months to cover all state highways in the parish. The public is being asked to assist.

As part of its observation of Community College Week, the Sabine Valley campus of Central Louisiana Technical and Community College (CLTCC) is hosting a Welding & Electrician Technology Career Exploration and Signing Day starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 24. The program is open to any high school senior wishing to enroll in the school’s Welding or Electrician program.

The annual Spring Heritage Tour of Peason Ridge will be held on Saturday March 27.

We were not able to conduct the tour last year and this year I have been working with Ft Polk and the Cultural Resources personnel and we are going to have it. Some changes will apply.

Robert Hable was elected as new town of Many mayor following the March 20 election in one of the closest watched races in recent history.

Hable, a Republican, was elected with 54 percent of the vote, or 54 percent of all 520 votes cast. Placing second was Democrat Ernest L. Williams with 131, or 25 percent of the vote. Democrat James D. Kennedy, a long-time town councilman, received 91 votes (18 percent). Mike Tarver received 15 votes for three percent of all votes cast.

Louisiana will shift into a less restrictive set of rules to help control the spread of COVID-19 after the current executive order expires Wednesday, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Tuesday.

The new regulations, which will remain in effect for 28 days, are similar to the Phase 3 White House-approved restrictions that were in place in the fall. Edwards said he was confident the state was ready to make the change, but he urged residents to continue taking precautions to control the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and to get vaccinated against the illness as soon as they are able.
