Observations

Detective Seegers, shown third from left in the group photo and at right, is community-minded. You’ll often see him out taking part in civic activities around town. These photos are from a Back to School event hosted last month for Many youth. He participated with other local law enforcement officers to help supply school items to area kids as a part of the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office’s outreach efforts.

Observations

This picture of the hanging tree appeared in the Nov. 5, 1970 issue of the Index. I took these pictures when I visited the site with Mr. Marion Tannehill over 50 years ago.

Observations

To get this photo, which also ran in the Nov. 5, 1970 issue of the Index, I laid flat on my back on the ground and looked up at the bottom of the hanging tree that had been cut off many years prior.

Observations

S. P. “Pete” Randolph, who at one time lived in Fisher, came to the Index office and provided information about “The Hanging Tree” after the initial story appeared in the Nov. 5, 1970 edition. This picture of Mr. Randolph looking over the Nov. 5, 1970 issue appeared the following week in the Nov. 12, 1970 edition.

Observations

This picture of “The Hanging Tree” appeared on the Internet some years back in a group of photos of things of interest in the Fisher area.

We remind all that tomorrow night is the big night for those who wish to have their voices heard by the Sabine Parish School Board regarding Gov. John Bel Edwards’ mandate that schoolchildren over age 5 be masked at school. A special Sabine Parish School Board meeting will be held Thursday, Aug. 26 at Many High School Gym at 5:30 p.m.

The special meeting was called at the request of “Unmask our Kids Sabine Parish” spokesperson and organizer Kresha Matkin, a nurse and mother of three school-age children who, along with several hundred local parents, is concerned about the physical, emotional and psychological impact of mask-wearing on students.

According to event organizers, those who wish to speak at the meeting are required to fill out a card at the door before those persons will be placed on the speaking schedule. Masks are required for all attending.

Gov. Edwards, La. Dept. of Health announce $100 cash vaccine incentive program for college students

Gov. Edwards, La. Dept. of Health announce $100 cash vaccine incentive program for college students

Last week, Gov. John Bel Edwards and the Louisiana Department of Health announced Shot For 100, a new vaccine incentive program that will give $100 to the first 75,000 college students who get their COVID-19 vaccine at participating institutions of higher education.

18-29-year-olds are one of the two least vaccinated age groups in Louisiana, and are reporting the most cases statewide.

“With the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant and its devastating impact on our communities including younger populations, we are seeing more young people go sleeves up. And that’s good. More than anything, students want an in-person college experience. But to do that safely, we need more shots in arms,” said Gov. Edwards. “It’s in everyone’s interest that our young people get the COVID vaccine - to protect themselves, their families and friends, and their larger communities.”

Gov. Edwards emphasizes mask mandate for k-12 students

Gov. Edwards emphasizes mask mandate for k-12 students

Gov. John Bel Edwards

(The Center Square) – Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards addressed Louisiana’s COVID-19 situation Friday and tried to dispel any notion his recent indoor mask mandate is without good cause – a reference to the state attorney general.

Edwards voiced a somber tone as he recounted new information from the Louisiana Department of Health.

“We have no reason to believe in our data that we’ve reached the peak or that we’re coming down,” Edwards said. “If anything, things are worse today than they were on Monday.”

The assessment comes amid record hospitalizations and infection growth, as well as the highest infection rate per capita in the country.

Humane Society overwhelmed; asks public for adoptions, donations

The Sabine Animal Shelter is experiencing a huge influx of animals at the shelter this month.

Humane Society President Jackie Conyer said much of the problem is caused by people not having their cats and dogs neutered or spayed. Conyer said, “We are getting more kittens and puppies than we’ve ever experienced before. If people would only spay/ neuter, these numbers could be greatly reduced.”

Conyer also said microchipping dogs and cats with owner contact information could reduce the large number of animals ending up at the shelter. The Sabine Animal Shelter will microchip and register animals for only $10 per animal if the owners will bring them in for the microchipping process. Local veterinarians also can microchip animals.

Gov. Edwards clarifies mask mandate to top education officials

Gov. John Bel Edwards

(The Center Square) – Gov. John Bel Edwards sent a letter Thursday to Louisiana Education Superintendent Cade Brumley to clarify issues relating to the governor’s statewide mask mandate as it applies to children returning to K-12 schools this month.

The clarification comes after Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry provided an optout template to his employees, which Landry then released to the public.

The document was shared on social media and prompted parents and concerned residents on different sides of the issue to contact schools.
