Kaitlin Byles loses battle with cystic fibrosis

Kaitlin Byles, 18, suffered from the genetic disease, cystic fibrosis, all of her life. She was first diagnosed at the age of less than threemonths old. The brave teenager has battled the disease for years with hospitalizations, treatments and medications. In the past eight months, Nov. 7, 2012 and June 4, 2013, Kaitlin had undergone two lung transplants. Kaitlin died on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, just five days short of her 19th birthday. She is the daughter of Kathy Scaife Byles and Jonas Byles, both of Many.

Jindal names Smith to BESE

BATON ROUGE – On Friday, Oct. 18, Gov. Bobby Jindal announced the appointment of Jane Holland Smith to the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). She will replace Stephen Waguespack, who left the board to serve as president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI). “Jane is bringing critical education experience and a lifelong passion for education to BESE,” Jindal said. “Her commitment to the academic success of Louisiana’s children will help us continue to ensure all of our families have an equal opportunity to a quality education. She as served as a teacher, a high school principal and a superintendent in Bossier Parish, and her experiences as a longtime legislator and an agency leader will be invaluable in developing solutions to continue moving our education system forward.”

Bring a can to vote Saturday; help supply SCOA food pantry

After you’ve checked the propositions on the Saturday, Oct. 19 ballot, take a moment to set out a can or two to donate at the polls. This small donation will help feed the needy in Sabine Parish, since all the donations will be housed at the Sabine Council on Aging’s Food Pantry.

Proposal for new school to be voted on Saturday

The current Many Elementary School opened its doors in 1969, originally built to house 350 students from grades kindergarten through fourth. But in recent years, the fourth graders were moved to Many Junior High School as the population has continued to steadily increase at MES, located on Middle Creek Road.

Freeman: Many’s water is safe

Just last week, five sites in DeSoto Parish Water District No. 1 were tested and discovered to have a rare amoeba in the system. Due to this recent finding, along with one in St. Bernard Parish in south Louisiana, the Town of Many wants to reassure its citizens that its water is completely safe for usage. “Our system is safe,” Many mayor Ken Freeman said. “We haven’t been under a boil alert since the drought two years ago and we take many measures to make sure your water is safe.”

Oct. 6-12 is National 4-H Week

More than six million young people across the country today will be celebrating National 4-H Week, which takes place annually during the first full week of October. Sabine Parish 4-H leverages National 4-H Week to celebrate the great things that the 4-H youth development program offers young people and highlights the incredible 4-H young people who each day work to a make a positive impact on their community. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, Many mayor Ken Freeman signed a proclamation declaring 4-H Week for the local area. Over 20 junior leaders, parents and volunteers came out for the signing of the proclamation. Promoting 4-H in Sabine Parish is a very important job, because area kids want skills to succeed in areas that are not always offered in a contained educational setting.

Sabine Parish CASA holds annual social

Thanks to CASA, 15-year-old Kaydenn DeVoe’s life will never be the same “CASA is just so special and I am so fortunate to have you all in my life,” she said at the Third Annual Sabine Parish CASA Awareness Social last week at VFW Post #4858 in Many. “CASA has helped me to become a better person and without CASA, I would have never got back to God.” DeVoe, who admitted to partying, drinking and using drugs, went to five different schools in just a 14-month period, before CASA’s intervention paid huge dividends in her life.

Natchitoches home made famous on silver screen to sell to highest bidder

NATCHITOCHES – A piece of Hollywood history will be sold on the auction block next month. The Cook -Taylor House – made famous in the film “Steel Magnolias” – will be auctioned off Saturday, Oct. 26 to the highest bidder in historic Natchitoches. Nationally recognized as a Preserve America Community, a Distinctive Destination and a Great American Main Street, the city of Natchitoches is the picturesque setting for what is fondly known as the “Steel Magnolia House.”

Teens missing

A 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old male are missing from the Ebarb-Zwolle area in Sabine Parish, according to the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office at presstime Monday, Oct. 7. The teens are believed to be together, detectives said. Reggie and Kim Ezernack of Zwolle, the parents of the missing girl, reported their daughter missing Sunday, Oct. 6. Kianna was last seen in black shorts and a hot pink shirt. She was described as weighing approximately 145 pounds , stood 5-3 and has long, brown hair. The young man she is believed to be in the company of is DeKendrick Lynch. An Amber Alert and Circle Dialing in the Ebarb, Zwolle and Noble area have been utilized to alert the public. If anyone has information regarding the missing teens, they are asked to notify the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office at 256-9241.
