TBLA Bass Unlimited banquet, auction draws huge crowd

Auctioneer Kevin McDonald and the Bassettes kept the crowd excited and bidding throughout the evening. Two original wood carvings were sold during the evening—one bass and one pelican. This bass generated quite a lot of excitement—it is about 4’ tall

Landrieu brings Senate Energy Committee to Toledo Bend Lake

Senator Mary Landrieu is shown as she chairs a hearing that highlighted Toledo Bend’s potential to create tens of thousands of high-paying industrial, commercial and agricultural jobs during the next 50 years.

U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, the chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, emphasized the job-creation potential of the Toledo Hydroelectric Project during a May 17 committee field hearing at the Cypress Bend Conference Center. “Toledo Bend has driven significant of economic development in this part of Louisiana since 1963,” Sen. Landrieu said.

Thief preys on vehicles

Cell phones, wallets and other items were stolen from several vehicles parked at St. John’s Catholic Church in Many on Sunday, May 25, according to Many Police Dept. and the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office. A brick was used to gain entry into the vehicles.

As faithful Catholics were attending morning mass on Sunday, May 25, a thief was lurking in the parking lot. According to one witness, a man wearing a blue bandana was observed wandering through the parking lot after the morning services had begun.

Dam homicide investigation continuing

On May 16, members of the Toledo Bend Fire Dept. were called to a location south of Toledo Bend Dam just off Hwy. 692 to extinguish a burning vehicle. After extinguishing the blaze, which totally engulfed the unidentified vehicle, firemen discovered a body inside. The male victim had apparently been murdered and then the vehicle was set on fire to destroy any evidence.

Pit bull ban, tractor under discussion at Many council

The purchase of a new tractor and a possible ban on pit bull terriers was two of many items under discussion when the Many Town Council met on May 20 at city hall. The town is set to purchase a new commercial-level tractor and bush hog, but some discussion was undertaken whether it should be open to the elements, or contain a cab with air conditioner due to the extreme heat of a Louisiana summer.

It was a momentous occasion in Zwolle on May 15, as members of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation of Louisiana  were on hand to name Zwolle as winners in their Cleanest City Contest.

Chief Procell resigns, Rivers assumes role

After serving honorably for six years, Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb’s Chief John Procell resigned his position in March, due to health reasons. Named to replace Chief Procell was his vice chairman of the tribe, Jason “Jake” Rivers. The appointment, made at a Council meeting, designated Rivers as the interim chief to fill the remaining term of Chief Procell.

Sawmill Days slated for this weekend

The Louisiana Long Leaf Lumber Co. is one of the major buildings in the Village of Fisher. Today it serves as the home of the Ole Mill Store. It still has the original plank floors.

The 39th Annual Fisher Sawmill Days festival will kick off Friday, May 16 at 6 p.m. with a street dance in the Village Square. Live bands, including Flashback and Bottoms Up, will provide the music. Free hotdogs and soft drinks will be available. The event is being sponsored by Calvin Braxton of Natchitoches Ford-Lincoln. This year’s festival is under the direction of Ann Anderson of The Ole Mill Store, which will be open both days for visitors to browse the many rooms, hoping to find something you “can’t live without!”

Man drowns on Toledo Bend

A fisherman (age and place of residence unknown) apparently drowned on Toledo Bend Lake in what was described as a boating accident on Sunday, May 4. The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Dept. received a call from a Florien woman at 4:49 p.m.

Florien Bible controversy spurs meeting

“Due to the recent confiscation of Bibles from the graduating class at Florien High School, it is time for Christians to unite and take a stand,” the Rev. John Lewing writes in a Sabine Parish ad regarding a meeting to be held at the Sabine Parish Fairgrounds on May 18 at 7 p.m.
