Book Nooks close to installation

Construction of the book nooks for the Town of Many is now complete and the book nooks are at the Depot Art Gallery being primped and painted.

Talented members of the Depot Art Guild are working daily to paint the little free lending libraries in cheerful scenes depicting favorite books and literary characters.

Hinds named Miss NSU

Abby Hinds and Otha Nelson have given a lot in their time at Northwestern State University, but both feel they have received much more in return from being active in student organizations. Their fellow students recently honored them by choosing Hinds as Miss NSU and Nelson as Mr. NSU.

Hinds is a senior health and exercise science, pre occupational therapy major from Many. She is the daughter of Amy and Rodney Wyatt and Eddy and Kristin Hinds. A member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, she serves as the organization’s president. She is a freshman orientation leader and student coordinator for the Office of First Year Experience. She was the 2016 Greek Woman of the Year and is a member of Purple Jackets, Order of Omega, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Kappa Phi.

Shoemaker arrested in SARC arson

 Today, Brett T. Shoemaker, 25, of Pleasant Hill, was booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center on a warrant obtained by the State Fire Marshal's Office for Simple Arson and Criminal Trespass. 
 
The warrant was issued in connection with the fire at SARC in Many on November 7.

Person of interest in custody after fire at SARC

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on November 6, a call went out regarding a fire at the SARC on San Antonio Avenue in Many.

The fire engulfed the back area of the building, but was extinguished.

In the morning hours of November 7, Assistant Police Chief Dewayne Brumley of Many PD has stated that a court order had been issued for the arrest of a male subject, who is in custody.  He was described as a former client of SARC.

The state fire marshal’s office has been contacted to assist with further investigation.

Garcie named Sabine’s Shining Star

A freshman nursing major at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches has been honored as the first recipient of the Sabine’s Shining Star award and will be introduced to the public in the Many Christmas Parade, according to Gay Corley, parade chairwoman.

Magical Christmas, this year’s parade theme, will be filled with floats, marching groups, the award-winning Many High Band and more, according to Corley. Miss Brittney Garcie will grace a float and be hailed as Sabine’s Shining Star, a teenager who has excelled in academics and extracurricular activities in the community.

Representative Howard proclaims National American Indian Heritage Month

On behalf of the Sabine Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Louisiana Representative Frank A. Howard along with his secretary, Whitney Hart, proclaimed November 2017 as National American Indian Heritage Month and urge all citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities. This Proclamation will be presented to the Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb.

Father seeks closure in son’s murder

It has been a long two years for Morris Davenport II, whose son was taken from him in 2015 in a murder case that still has not come to a conclusion.

“I just want to know what happened,” Davenport told the Index. “Who did this and why? The feeling on my soul is overwhelming. My family and son deserve to have closure.”

Choctaw-Apache Tribe to stay busy for Native American Heritage Month

The Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb has planned a busy month of themed events for Native American Heritage Month.

They will hold their Native American Art Fest and is inviting all artists and tradesmen to enter the competition on Saturday, November 4 at the Powwow Grounds in Ebarb. All entries are due by 10:30 a.m. and there are divisions for both youth and adult. Cash Prizes will be awarded.

Chamber banquet hosted at Wildwood Resort; honors Many Veterinary Hospital

Over 80 members and guests enjoyed a cool evening on the deck of Wildwood Resort on Tuesday night, October 24 as they attended the 71st annual Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

Round tables, covered with white table cloths and decorated with pumpkins, lanterns, colorful Autumn signs, and ribbons made the banquet festive.
