U.S. Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) today announced that Louisiana is eligible to receive $11.6 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to fight opioid addiction. Among other things, the funds will be used to support treatment and to reduce deaths from opioidrelated overdoses.

For the first time in 36 years according to the trustees of Social Security and Medicare, they will have to dip into the trust fund to meet its obligations.

“Perhaps lawmakers will now take the action necessary, in a timely fashion, to ensure the viability of the retirement and health care programs American workers invest in each payday,” says Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens.

While many Americans spend the Fourth of July holiday with friends and family, some actually spend their time being medically treated for a fireworks injury. The latest report from the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission found an estimated 7,600 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during the Independence Day period.

There were an estimated 11,100 fireworks-related injuries for the year. Unfortunately, many injuries are to children. In fact, children younger than 15 years of age accounted for 31 percent of the estimated injuries.

The talented Ulmers, 2 Country 4 Nashville, a husband-wife duo who played to a full house at Sabine Theater in Many last year is headed back. “We’re looking forward to seeing all of our Many friends,” Jo-el Ulmer said. Jo-el is the electric guitar-picking and vocalist partner of wife LeAnne, who sings and plays percussive backup behind her husband’s hot lead.

Music in Many will feature the pair on Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Many Community Center [former Sabine Theater] on San Antonio Ave. The Music in Many live music series is sponsored by the Town of Many, Mayor Ken Freeman and the Many Cultural District. Tickets for the June 23 show are $10 for adults and  $5 for children. Veterans, as always, will be admitted free.

A man was shot and killed on the night of Monday, June 18 at the Apollo Apartments in Many.

According to the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Department, 23-year-old Lynnquithis Lee January of Lake Charles was sitting at the bottom of the staircase at D building when he was approached and shot from behind, says Assistant Coroner Ron Rivers.

The body had multiple gunshot sounds in the face and body.

An autopsy has been ordered to further the investigation, which is currently underway.
