Law enforcement, schools collaborate on active shooter drill

On Thursday, August 9, members of the Sabine Parish School District, along with the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Many Police Department, the Louisiana State Police, and The Office of Homeland Security participated in a full-scale emergency exercise inside Many High School.

This exercise involved a scenario in which an armed intruder entered the campus with the intent to do harm.

Poche donation supports scholarship, fishing team

The family of Dylan Kyle Poche presented the NSU Foundation with $14,000, proceeds from a fishing tournament organized in memory of the NSU student and angler. Two freshman students on the NSU Fishing Team will each receive $5,000 this year with the remainder going to defray NSU Fishing Team expenses.

Depot museum inches closer to reality

The Historic Depot Museum in Many is much closer to becoming a reality.

Members of the Many Cultural District Advisory Committee, the Sabine Parish Historical Society, the Many City Council and Many Mayor Ken Freeman are hopeful that the museum will finally be ready for exhibits in 2019.

The renovation of the depot and conversion into an historical museum for Many and the entire parish is underway.

Sabine placed under burn ban

President of Sabine Parish’s Police Jury Ronnie Bison and David Davis, local director of the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness have declared a burn ban for Sabine Parish that will last until it is rescinded at a later date.

The two state that there is a definite threat to the property and lives of those in Sabine Parish due to the current extreme drought condition.  It prohibits all outside burning of but not just extended to garbage, leaves, and brush.  Burn permits are issued only by one of three Sabine Parish fire chiefs.

Violators are subject to a fine of not less than $100 but not more than $500 and court costs.

Parents, friends redo MHS bathrooms adding encouraging phrases for students

What started as a post read on Facebook several weeks ago blossomed into a wonderful, much-needed MHS Bathroom Project.

Stephanie Dees Milliken, a 1991 MHS graduate, saw how updating the school restrooms could benefit the students. She sent the post to MHS Principal Norman Booker III and he texted back, “Go for it!”

Kriste LaTour contributed a Facebook page and posted it on July 20. From there, the project took off.

Fundraiser seeks to improve Taylor House, Many Depot Museum

Two well-known organizations are joining forces this fall to raise money for their work.

Project Celebration and the Many Cultural District Advisory Committee will host a huge, all-day fundraiser at Cypress Bend Resort on Saturday, October 6. Funds raised will go toward repairing and renovating the Taylor House, Project Celebration’s sanctuary home for abused women and children, and also the Cultural District renovation and restoration of the old Many Depot to become a cultural and historical museum for Sabine Parish and Many.
