A large gathering of area citizens squeezed into Bayou Crawfish on San Antonio Ave, in Many on Friday afternoon, December 14 to celebrate the end-of-year birthdays of three World War II veterans and recognize then for their military service.

Honored for their service to America were Charles Davis of the Toledo Bend area, Douglas Curtis of Many and Alton Mahaffey of Florien.

Davis, now 93, served in the United States Navy from 1941-47, joined the military at the age of 16, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He and his brother, Albert, who joined the Marines, were both assigned to the U.S.S. Helena, which sank when it was torpedoed in 1943 in the Kula Gulf. His brother perished, but Davis survived the tragedy, spending 36 hours in the seas before rescue. Davis served at Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal. Solomon Island, New Georgia, Kula Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Many Mayor Ken Freeman has named Mary Beth Key Brocato to the position of City Councilman at large for the Many City Council.

The Many City Council members voted unanimously for Brocato to fill the position.

She fills the vacancy left by the death of City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Richardson Peterson who served in these positions since 2001.

Mayor Freeman also nominated longtime City Councilman James Kennedy as the new Mayor Pro Tempore. He was unanimously approved by the City Council members.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises residents that beginning Monday, January 7, 2019, DOTD maintenance crews in Sabine Parish will be removing illegal signs along the LA 191 corridor.

All illegally placed signs on state right-of-way, regardless of size and mounting location, will be removed and disposed of by DOTD maintenance personnel. Prior to removal, DOTD personnel will be placing red stickers on signs with economic value as required by DOTD policy. An example of a sign with economic value would be a sign constructed of plywood and 2”x 4” studs. Signs of no economic value will not be identified with the red sticker. Examples of signs with no economic value would be a cardboard sign stapled to a wooden utility pole, or inserted into the ground with a wire frame.

Come Friday, two of “America’s Greatest Generation” will be honored at a special birthday party at 2 p.m. at Bayou Crawfish Restaurant in downtown Many. They are Charles I. Davis, who will be 93 on December 15, and Douglas W. Curtis, who turned 92 on Oct. 31. Both are local veterans of World War II.

“We consider it an honor to have the opportunity to put this together for these fine gentlemen,” Gentry said.

Mr. Charles I. Davis served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 16, 1941 until Feb. 26, 1947. He joined at only sixteen years old after the bombing of Pearl Harbor because he said the attack “[peed] me off.” Davis is a native of Alexandria, but has lived in Sabine Parish for almost fifty years.

After an extremely exciting and fun fall season, Sabine Parish Soccer Club is pleased to announce that they are currently accepting registrations for the spring season at www.playyon.com/sabinesporting. In addition to organizing the team, they played several tournaments against higher-level and experienced opponents this fall while scoring and performing well.

A strong response to the launch of the ACT Work Ready Community at the CDC building in Many on Tuesday evening, December 4, was felt by the committee.

Kenneth Ammons, chairman of the ACT Work Ready Community, welcomed the group and gave a brief history of the committee, which was formed in June, 2018.

The first training was hosted in July in Nashville, attended by Ammons and his wife, Donna. The Chamber funded the trip so the couple could learn about the program.

In October, 2018, Kristy Brumley and Shelly Rivers, representing the Sabine Parish School Board, sat in on the second session of the seminar.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Many with lights all along San Antonio Avenue and lots of activities scheduled for December 13-19 as part of a DeLIGHTful Christmas Festival.

The second annual Studio B Christmas Spectacular is an event that everyone looks forward to each Christmas season. This year the Christmas spectacular will be at the Sabine Parish Fairgrounds on December 13 from 7 to 8 p.m. Choreographer Becky Miller promises it will be a show with lots of talented, charismatic children dancing their hearts out for this big Christmas show.

The Many High School Band will present its annual Christmas concert on Friday, December 14. The musicale will begin at 7 p.m. at the Many Community Center. Band director Scott De-Bose promises Christmas songs of good cheer that are sure to put the audience in a Merry Christmas frame of mind.
