A large gathering of area citizens squeezed into Bayou Crawfish on San Antonio Ave, in Many on Friday afternoon, December 14 to celebrate the end-of-year birthdays of three World War II veterans and recognize then for their military service.
Honored for their service to America were Charles Davis of the Toledo Bend area, Douglas Curtis of Many and Alton Mahaffey of Florien.
Davis, now 93, served in the United States Navy from 1941-47, joined the military at the age of 16, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He and his brother, Albert, who joined the Marines, were both assigned to the U.S.S. Helena, which sank when it was torpedoed in 1943 in the Kula Gulf. His brother perished, but Davis survived the tragedy, spending 36 hours in the seas before rescue. Davis served at Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal. Solomon Island, New Georgia, Kula Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
