The Many City Council met in a special called meeting on July 3 to consider several items of business regarding the Many Police Department.

The meeting takes place one week after a hostile meeting held at Many City Hall regarding the same subject.

During the meeting, the council voted unanimously to place three propositions on the November ballot to let the voters decide how the chief of police of the Many Police Department will be appointed.

Louisiana Music Hall of Famer and Grammy nominee Tab Benoit will serve as Honorary Chair of the 40th Annual Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival which will be held on July 26-27 in Prather Coliseum on the Northwestern State University campus. In addition to serving as Chair, Benoit will be inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists and will make several appearances at the festival.

“It is our honor to recognize Tab Benoit as an incredibly exciting musician, whose distinctive sound captures the vibrancy of Louisiana’s traditional culture,” said Dr. Shane Rasmussen, director of the festival and NSU’s Louisiana Folklife Center. “This year’s festival theme – Vive la Louisiane! – is a celebration of how folk tradition is alive and well in Louisiana. It’s fitting that this year we should honor a musician of Tab Benoit’s stature, as he has inspired so many others to follow in his steps.”

DeSoto Regional Health System is pleased to announce that the ground was broken on their new Rural Healthcare Clinic on June 28 at 10 a.m.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies was Todd Eppler, CEO of DeSoto Regional Health System (DRHS). An invocation was led by Brian McNew with McNew Architecture. Remarks were provided by Mayor Pie Martinez and Town Councilwoman Martha Henderson. Other attendees included members of the DRHS Board of Directors Deborah Dees, Johnny May, Stephen Flanders, Richard Wilkinson, and John Freeman. Also present were Joel Bianca of Citizen Bank; John Bradley, Chris Scooter, and Rafe Eubanks of Integrity Builders; and Dr. Peter Lau and Kimberly Rials, FNP.

DRHS is planning to spend almost one million dollars on this project, which represents he commitment that the board has made to serving the Zwolle community.

Sabine Parish Tax Assessor Cindy Manasco has announced that after a total of 34 years in the assessors office and the last seven in its chief position, she will not seek re-election in October.

“It has been a privilege and honor to serve as your assessor, and I want to thank the voters from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me to serve in this position,” Manasco said. “I am very proud of the many accomplishments and advancements my team and I have made in the past 7 years.”

Madison and Will Pleasant, daughter of Anthony and Shawn Pleasant and grandchildren of Delmar and Frances Hodges of Zwolle and Barbara and the late Anthony Ruggerio of Marthaville, have both qualified to compete in a number of rodeo events.

Madison is competing at the Louisiana Junior Brahman State Show. Madison is currently serving as the Louisiana Jr Brahman Association and Louisiana Jr Cattleman’s Association President and elected to the American Jr. Brahman Board of Directors.

The town of Many’s Mayor Ken Freeman was arrested to a round of applause shortly after a special called council meeting on June 27 to place an issue on the November ballot regarding the town adopting a policy of having the police chief appointed by the council.

The arrest stems from an incident in May, when Freeman was called on his private cell by a citizen who was being arrested for not signing a speeding ticket.

The town of Many’s Mayor Ken Freeman was arrested to a round of applause shortly after a special called council meeting on June 27 to place an issue on the November ballot regarding the town adopting a policy of having the police chief appointed by the council.

The arrest stems from an incident in May, when Freeman was called on his private cell by a citizen who was being arrested for not signing a speeding ticket.  The mayor, who was traveling home from an engagement, allegedly sped through the town headed toward the Sabine Parish detention center when a Many Police Officer attempted to pull him over.  According to reports, the mayor continued toward the detention center and ran a stop sign.  According to Observations, the mayor and his wife pulled to the front door of the detention center.
