VFW post 5187 honored

The Town of Zwolle honored the Zwolle-Ebarb VFW Memorial Post 5187 by designating the comrades as Grand Marshalls of the Christmas Parade. It is so impressive to realize that the community does love, honor and respect all those who served without limitation to ensure our freedoms. Benny Garcie, Commander; Walter Korb, Quartermaster; and Syl Martinez, Senior Vice Commander, along with all the VFW and Auxiliary members appreciate the honor and extend thanks to those who bestowed this honor and all those attending the parade that acknowledged them on the float.

“A Christmas Carol” is tradition at theatre in Many in December

Two performances of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” were presented at the Many Community Center on Saturday night, December 9 and again the next afternoon in a matinee. The age-old play has become a holiday tradition in Sabine Parish with Many Bozeman as director and her husband, Bill Osborn, as producer. The talented Sabine Parish Players bring the play to life over and over again.

Young and old alike watch in awe as Ebenezer Scrooge changes from a curmudgeon into a caring old man and how he reaches out to help his employee, Bob Cratchit and family, which includes the crippled boy, Tiny Tim.

LSMSA hosts Christmas party, cookie exchange

It’s syrup makin’ time!

In the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes wise king Solomon writes that there is a purpose for all things and that there is a time to plant and a time to pluck what you have planted. We have many traditions that we continue to use out in the country that pertains to our crops and of gathering and preserving them. When the first frost falls we know it is “hog killin’ time,” time to go and start smoking fresh meat in the smoke house, and also time for “syrup makin’!” So many of our traditions have been lost over the years.

Raeleigh-Mae Denise Brodnax

Raeleigh-Mae Denise Brodnax was born November 8, 2017, at 1:14 p.m. to Thomas and Tracy Brodnax. She was eight pounds, two ounces and 20 inches long.

Her grandparents on her mother’s side are David Irvin Strebeck of Marthaville and Jessie Mae Strebeck of Many. Great-grandparents are Amos and Linnie Strebeck of Marthaville and William Henry and Edna Mae Pender of Montgomery.

Zwolle-Ebarb VFW, Choctaw-Apache Tribe honor veterans

A Veterans Day luncheon was held on November 11 at the Zwolle-Ebarb Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5187.

The luncheon was sponsored by two organizations, the Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb and the Post 5187 and its auxiliary.

LSMSA students have opportunity to stay active with Life in Motion program

Jonathan Rivera has taken his love of physical activity that began when he was a little boy watching his grandmother rise each day at 5 a.m. to work out and introduced Life in Motion to students and members of the faculty and staff at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts.

“My vision is to jumpstart a health promotion program that will increase the value and importance of physical activity on academic success for the student body prior to transitioning to college and beyond,” said Rivera, a residence life intern at LSMSA and a graduate assistant in fitness and wellness at Northwestern State University. “This extends beyond that holistically to other dimensions of wellness.
