Hopkins receives diploma from LSU’s Graduate School of Banking

Marianne Hopkins, Assistant Trust Officer and Public Finance Administrator at Sabine State Bank and Trust Company, is among the 185 bankers who received graduation diplomas on May 31 from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University. This three-year program provides courses covering all aspects of banking, economics and related subjects. Students traveled from twenty-one states and Mexico to participate in this Session.

Sponsored by 15 southern state bankers associations in cooperation with the Division of Continuing Education at LSU, the banking school requires attendance on campus for three years, with extensive bank study assignments between sessions. The faculty consists of bankers, business and professional leaders, and educators from all parts of the U.S.

Korb recognized at VFW state convention

The Veterans of Foreign Wars hosted their State Convention in Alexandria on June 6-9. One of the many recognitions was a Spirit Award. It was to be awarded to the person who went beyond the yearly participation in the State of Louisiana programs as an individual and stepped outside the box to contribute to the community or our veterans. Zwolle-Ebarb VFW Post 5187 Commander Benny Garcie and Auxiliary President Pat Getschel compiled documentation, organized a notebook of events and submitted Walter Korb, Quartermaster, as the Post 5187 competition choice. Mr. Korb was the proud recipient of the 2018-2019 State of Louisiana Spirit Award! Shown with the beautiful plaque presented to him are, from left, Commander Benny Garcie, Quartermaster Walter Korb and Auxiliary President Pat Getschel.

Sepulvado recognized by VFW

It was a proud day for the Zwolle-Ebarb VFW Post 5187 Auxiliary and Autumn Sepulvado, a recent graduate of Zwolle High School. Miss Sepulvado was invited to attend the State of Louisiana VFW Conference on June 8 to receive a State of Louisiana Auxiliary Gossett Scholarship Award of $1,000. She was entered into the competition by Zwolle-Ebarb VFW Auxiliary President Pat Getschel.

4-H camp completes first week

A large number of local students attended the first week of 4-H camp.

Buses began rolling into the LSU AgCenter Grant Walker Educational Center on May 20, kicking off the official start of the summer camping season.

About 375 youth from parishes across the state arrived Monday afternoon, eager to sign up for their favorite educational track and recreational activities for the first week of 4-H summer camp.

“I came here to try something different,” said Sabine Parish fifth grader Lehr Turner.

Spay/Neuter Program

The Sabine Humane Society offers a monthly spay and neuter voucher program. Vouchers are available to the first 15 callers, and the society will pay 50 percent of the cost to the vet. For those on Medicaid or Medicare, the society will pay 100 percent of the cost of spaying or neutering.

Interested parties are asked to call 318-645-7156 at 8 a.m. on the first day of the month. You should leave a message indicating you are interested in a voucher and provide your name and phone number.

Sheriff’s department hosts emergency medical seminar

Dr. Mark Holder, a full-time deputy sheriff, instructed those in attendance including school nurses, School Resource officers and teachers on mass casualty incidents and emergency medical treatment in a non-hospital environment.

Lunker bass replicas awarded at Big Bass Splash

Toledo Bend Lake Association awarded 42 lunker bass replicas to anglers on Sunday, May 19 at the Sealy Big Bass Splash.

The Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) awarded 42 lunker bass replicas to anglers at the Toledo Bend Sealy Outdoors Big Bass Splash at Cypress Bend Park on Sunday, May 19. Dinah Medine, coordinator of the TBLA Lunker Bass Program, and TBLA President Ricky Yeldell presented the replicas to anglers from Louisiana, Texas and Missouri. The largest fish was caught by Sean Kennon, of DeQuincy, LA, weighing in at 14.0 pounds, qualifying in the “Top 100” largest reported largemouth bass caught on Toledo Bend. Four of the fish caught and released were previously tagged fish in the TBLA Lunker Bass Replica program.
