Austin and Earnest to wed

It is with great joy that we announce the upcoming wedding of our children, Courtney Paige Austin to Tyler Dewayne Earnest. Courtney is the daughter of Kimberly Faircloth Weber of Noble and Wm. Keith Austin of Pineland, Texas. Tyler is the son of Stephanie and Bill Slayton of Zwolle.

The couple will be united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church, May 5 at 6 p.m. with a reception to follow at the Zwolle Festival Building.

“Support the Fort” meeting to be held at Fort Jesup SHS

Fort Jesup State Historic Site, declared a “National Historic Landmark” by the United States Congress due to its important role in American History, has been on “caretaker” status since 2015 and is open to the public by appointment only.

A group of concerned citizens have formed the “Friends of Fort Jesup” to help keep the site open but need your help. If you think Fort Jesup is worth saving as a historical site and community resource, please join the friends on Tuesday May 9 at Fort Jesup State Historic Site at 5:30 p.m. for the monthly meeting.

They will be planning the upcoming “Fort Fest” celebration on Saturday June 3 honoring the 195th Anniversary of the founding of Fort Jesup, discussing future plans for site, and future events.

Fundraiser set for Thompson-LaCour

Family and friends of Louise Thompson-LaCour will be hosting a fundraiser to help with expenses caused by a recent house fire.

The fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 5 from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. at the Many Fairgrounds and will feature music by the groups Johnny Earthquake and the Moondogs, The Rivers Review, James Wagley and the Turn-Ups, and more. Admission is by donation and concessions will be available.

Mansfield SHS sets Pleasant Hill battlefield bus tour

As part of National Tourism Week, Mansfield State Historic Site staff – in collaboration with the DeSoto Parish Tourism Bureau – will conduct a guided tour of the Pleasant Hill Battlefield on Saturday, May 13. For those who call and register before April 22 the cost will be $25 per person. After that, the price will go to $30. Call today and take advantage of the savings.

Visitors will meet at Mansfield State Historic Site at 10:30 a.m. A brief overview of the battle of Mansfield and lead up to the battle of Pleasant Hill will be given at the museum, before leaving for the battlefield. Bus transportation and lunch will be provided to registered participants.

Palmer’s 90th birthday celebrated

On Saturday, March 25, about 200 family and friends came together to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Ruby J. Conley Palmer at the VFW Hall in Many.

Guests traveled from many states to celebrate this momentous occasion, which included a delicious lunch, cake, door prizes, entertainment and a candy station

Plan to attend the Melrose Arts, Crafts Festival

 

More than 100 vendors will be present at the 43rd Annual Melrose Plantation Arts & Crafts Festival April 22 and 23 including new vendors and old favorites. The festival opens Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-12 and includes self-guided tours of the grounds featuring century-old live oaks. For an extra $5 guests can go on a guided tour of the Big House, Yucca House and the African House.

The festival is sponsored by the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches (APHN) and annually attracts more than 2,000 visitors during the two-day event. The Southeast Tourism Society recently named the Melrose Arts and Crafts Festival one of its “Top 20 Events” in the Southeast for April, 2017.

Time to register for Youth Fish Fest 2017

 

The Toledo Bend Lake Association and Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District are beyond thrilled to share an open invitation for Fish Fest 2017. The eighth annual tournament will take place on Toledo Bend Lake at the Sabine River Authority’s Cypress Bend Park. Fishermen will turn the park turquoise in their TBLA/Sabine SWCD tshirts on Saturday, June 3.

Their goal is to register 150 youth by April 28. Fishing time begins at 7:30 a.m. Fishermen can start fishing after they check in at the registration table. Weigh-in time will be at 11 a.m. The event is open to school age children registered in kindergarten through 12th grade for the school year 2016-2017 attending schools in Louisiana and Texas. There will be six specie categories for first, second, and third place. Specie categories are bass, bream, catfish, white perch, turtle, and other. All fishermen must be pre-registered to participate on Saturday, June 3.

Psi Chapter Awards DKG-Girl Scout Patch

Psi Chapter presented the DKG-Girl Scout patch to several young ladies from Girl Scout Troop #540 (Zwolle) at the chapter’s March 14 meeting. This patch is a Girl Scout council patch that requires the accomplishment of pre-determined activities. The curriculum allows girls to fulfill requirements suitable to each level of Girl Scout activity. The activities focus on developing leadership skills while exploring various careers including education, developing an awareness of community and government, and investigating the history of both Delta Kappa Gamma and Girl Scouts.

Seventeen Girl Scouts from Troop #540 met the requirements for this patch and they were honored in a small ceremony. The girls who met the requirements are: Brownies Shyla Bridges, Nadean Bugg, Kevory Burr, Layla Carnline, Larkaye Carter, Addie Faircloth, Makayla Jackson, Gracie LaRoux, Izabella Quintero, Lillianna Quintero, Anabella Ramirez, Adleigh Sepulvado, Mollie Sepulvado

Local students attend Spring Livestock Show

On January 26, Sabine Parish students participated in the Sabine Parish Spring Livestock Show at The Sabine Parish Fairgrounds.

The show included approximately 40 market swine, 4 market and breeding sheep, five breeding goats, seven dairy cattle, and 50 beef cattle. The students exhibited their animals in the various specie divisions along with showmanship and Premier Exhibitor competitions. Many sponsors helped make this show possible. 11 buckles were given out for winners in three age divisions in each species category.
