Malificent 2 is the Walt Disney movie scheduled to play at Movies in Many on Saturday, April 17.

The movie is free and is sponsored by The Town of Many Cultural District Advisory Committee, Many Mayor Ken Freeman and the Many City Council.

Malificent 2 is the sequel to Malificent 1 and stars Angelina Jolie as the Mistress of Evil.

Northwestern State University officially opened a state of the art Esports venue, the largest of its kind in Louisiana. The Esports venue is located in Room 122 of the Sylvan Friedman Student Union, a large space that was formerly the campus bookstore. Competitive Esports is a club sport administered through the WRAC, but the facility is open to all students for recreational gaming.

Esports are video games that are played in a highly organized competitive environment. Games can range from popular, team-oriented multiplayer online battle arenas to single player first person competitions, survival battles or virtual reconstructions of physical sports. The concept of Esports at NSU began at the beginning of Dr. Chris Maggio’s tenure as president when student focus groups put forth suggestions on what campus amenities prospective students would find attractive.

The Sabine Humane Society offers a monthly spay and neuter voucher program. Vouchers are available to the first 15 callers, and the society will pay 50 percent of the cost to the vet. For those on Medicaid or Medicare, the society will pay 100 percent of the cost of spaying or neutering.

Interested parties are asked to call 318-645-7156 at 8 a.m. on the first day of the month. You should leave a message indicating you are interested in a voucher and provide your name and phone number.

Flowering cherry trees are true showstoppers. These trees can be seen blooming around Louisiana in February and March. In the southern part of the state, the first flowers appear in late January. Right now, they are in full bloom on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, and boy are they gorgeous!

The attractive flowers are a vibrant, dark pink and are produced on bare branches just before leaves emerge to create a stunning show. These deciduous trees grow up to 20 feet in height and are equally as wide. They are well-suited for USDA plant hardiness zones 7b to 9a.

Flowering cherries make a great specimen, or accent, tree in the landscape. The tree form is upright, and its arching branching habit makes it perfect for lining a road or driveway.

The Corona virus has not stopped parents from reading to their preschoolers! Children are continuing to progress toward their goal of listening to 1000 books before beginning kindergarten.

This free program offered by the Sabine Parish Library is available to all preschoolers. Come by any branch of the library for more information.

Many of us get a generous amount of time off for the holidays at the end of each year. This time is best spent with family, reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the next. It is also a great time to get outside and get things done in the garden.

We are very fortunate here in the South to have good weather during the winter months for gardening, and it is an excellent time to plant trees and shrubs in the landscape.

Although deciduous trees and shrubs are in their dormancy, roots are still actively growing. Planting during December, January and February provides plants with several months to develop a strong root system before they put out a new flush of leaves and flowers in spring.

Crape myrtles (Lagerstroemia indica) are one of the most controversial and often-discussed ornamental plants among gardeners, landscapers, conservationists, naturalists, growers, researchers and educators. How did the crape myrtle become such a hot topic for discussion?

First things first — is it crepe or is it crape? Check any number of references and you are likely to find it spelled either way. Crape is the preferred name and what we most commonly use here in Louisiana.
