Patchwork

by donna smith ammons

Cold weather has hit Sabine Parish and many people are not happy. Some have threatened to stay inside by the fire, while others run in and out, carrying logs to the fire, going to work or to the store to replenish groceries.

My bones are aching, too!! The cold affects me differently than it did when I was a kid growing up in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Winter was a looked forward to season for all of us kids.

Christmas has come and gone and we still have a living room full of gifts that need to be delivered to Zachary and Youngsville. It looks like Santa will arrive down South sometime after the new year.

We had a small Christmas gathering several days after December 25 with Mom, my brother, hubby’s sister and the cat. No ham or turkey for us…we dined on salad, spaghetti with homemade sauce, French bread and cookies for dessert. I even got some extra egg nog!!

This past year has been busy!

Several of our “stand-out” moments included:

--Riding the train to Washington, D.C. from New Orleans in March. Our daughter-in-law had a conference in the nation’s capitol and before she knew it, our son (her husband) and her in-laws were game for a trip. It was marvelous and so much fun riding, eating and sleeping on the train! On the trip we were able to tour a number of Smithsonian attractions, see the Lincoln Memorial, go to the zoo and best of all, visit Daddy’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. After a whirlwind trip in the city, we rented a car and went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania and spent two days in Amish Country! Hubby-dear even drove a horse and buggy!!

PUBLIC SERVANTS?

by Pete Abington

Are these public servants? Several polls indicate that Congress’s approval rating comes in at a record low between 9% and 11%. A lot of these low poll numbers are driven by the fact that Congress is in control of setting the laws that individuals and corporations are governed by. They govern most everything including our nation’s economy. Our debt ceiling just keeps climbing.

What is really disconcerting is when you look at all the perks they give themselves. Few companies offer perks that compare to what Congress gets.

Patchwork

I don’t think I’ve ever been so behind in my Christmas shopping, activities, baking and wrapping. At this point, I am wondering if I will have everything done by December 25.

We have busy “participating” in activities for a month now. If it wasn’t narrating “The Hanging of the Green” at our church, or attending church programs, we were busy at Dirty Santa, shopping, Ultreya, where we swapped ornaments, buying items for the Louisiana Children’s Home or having a UMW Luncheon. Not to mention, shopping for Toys for Tots, separating my own gifts into stacks to wrap (not done yet), visiting Mom each day, doing laundry and trying to keep house (just a little), I wouldn’t have anything to do.

Reflections: Dangerous Toys

By Jerry Pierce

A national consumer group is publicizing its annual list of most dangerous toys just in time for Christmas shopping. The biggest question raised by the products on the list is how somebody talked a toy company into manufacturing the things in the first place.

One of the items, for example, is something called Heel Wheels, which can transform a regular pair of kids’ shoes into roller skates. Those things have emergency room written all over them. By the way, a child in this country is treated in a hospital every three minutes for a toy-related injury according to an organization called World Against Toys Causing Harm. The Heel Wheels should drive those hospital visits up substantially.

Patchwork

By donna smith ammons

I am beginning to think that I have animals of all kinds lurking in the woods that surround our house. Each morning I can hear a donkey bray. I know that my favorite gray donkey in Chet and Trudy’s pasture is up and at ‘em. Later, when I am headed out, I quickly scan the pasture until I’ve found him and then smile. It’s kind of like getting to see Eeyore each day!! We’ve had deer wander up to the backyard and of course, there used to be plenty of snakes. (Some of them met their demise by shovel and a crazy woman!)

I usually don’t have a problem buying Christmas presents for those I love. This year has presented a real problem.

I am stumped when it comes to my youngest son and his wife, who are moving to Wilmington, North Carolina at the first of the year. What can you get for a couple who has everything?

And considering they will be packing, do I really want to give them breakable items, or bulky items just to open, pack and move?

The three grandkids came for Thanksgiving and we were excited to see them, along with their parents, Davy and Kt, and Uncle Paul and Aunt Lexie.

It was nice to have an even dozen eat Thanksgiving dinner at our home. Of course, getting ready for the event was a madhouse!! I had prepared some of the food a day in advance, so it wouldn’t be so crazy.

Gosh I sounded good!!

Recently I advised my daughter-in-law to “step out of the box”— “embrace a new adventure” and “live life to the fullest.” I told her not to live on “what ifs.”

I sounded so mature that I impressed myself. I was encouraging and strong.

I am a seasoned traveler—by vehicles, camper, train, ships and in the air—so I felt like I could shed some light on her impending adventure.
