Are Americans Crazy?

By Dr. Glenn Mollette

Has America simply gone crazy? We never want to think that we are a bit crazy or that people we love are experiencing craziness but it is reality. America has an overwhelming problem with craziness or I should say mental health issues.

Patchwork

have been blessed with many caring friends and for that I am thankful. In the first four months of 2018, friends have surrounded me when I needed them. They have been by my sad during the saddest and scariest times of my life. In fact, 2018 has been a rollercoaster ride for my emotions.

The final week of Mother’s life was a very emotional time for me; but it was friends who stood with me and cried, who offered encouragement and who let me know that they sympathized with me as I bid goodbye to my beloved Mom. From a talk in the lobby of SRRC, a kind word in the hallway and a verse that helped another get through her own mother’s death…..to short visits to say goodbye to my Mother, a sweet post on Facebook from a new friend and phone calls.

With my 50-year mark of graduation from high school, I am getting a little reminiscent of those days of carefree living, going to school, sharing ballgames, pep rallies and movies with friends and looking forward to the future.

I listened to the radio a lot back then and was in to music. I still loved the Beatles and I could sing every song by heart. Still can…but ask me about Algebra and I draw a big blank!!

“We’re the Class that’s really great! We’re the Class of ’68!!!!”

I wonder how many times we chanted that at pep rallies, ballgames and other gatherings at Picayune Memorial High School in Picayune, Mississippi.

This year, 2018 is our 50th class reunion. It seems impossible that we have been out of high school for a half of century.

Spring has arrived. I don’t think any of us were sad to see winter retire for another year!!

However, with Spring came pollen, (Achoo!) allergies and the “sniffles” for those of us who suffer from the yellow powder that covers the ground, our vehicles and floats through the air.

Last summer, hubby-dear and granddaughter, Riley Kate, decided to become beekeepers. They talked over what they would need. On her own, Riley read about bees and was quite knowledgeable when she and PaPaw went into the pasture to set up the hives.

However, before this could be done, there needed to be materials ordered. Boxes of beehives came and they patiently put them together. Then, of course, they needed books to study about their project.

Sometimes I get myself in awful messes. Take last Sunday night for example.

I decided it was time to put my Christmas dishes away and bring out my gardening plates, bowls and salad plates. I store them in the tippy top shelf of my pantry in the kitchen.

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

I am back. A year ago, on St. Patrick’s Day I did not have the luck of the Irish, although I was wearing a green shirt. I was at the Bellaire Fitness Center in Bossier, getting ready to compete in the Senior Olympics Bean Bag Baseball Tournament. We were lining up to have a group picture taken before starting to play.

As I stood up and tried to get in line, I stumbled and fell. One second I was very happy and ready to have a good time and the next second I was on the floor with a broken femur. It happened so fast that I do not know just what happened, but I would much rather have broken the camera as I’ve been cautioned not to do. You can always replace a camera.

I have been stricken with a new malady. It’s called “old age” and it is horrible.

Years ago there was a song,” She Can’t Find Her Keys”. I can identify with that little tune so well after celebrating a recent birthday. Why am I older but still feel young? (In my heart I am only 18 or 19) One of those mysteries of the aging process, I guess.

Mother was an excellent cook, even on a tight budget when we were traveling around the states while Daddy was in the military.

She had handed-down recipes from her mother and shared recipes with other Marine wives and friends from California to Hawaii, to North Carolina, Arizona, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Mississippi and Louisiana. She also had a recipe book with clipped recipes she found in magazines that she wanted to try.

Brother and I have fond memories of some of her best recipes--- the family spaghetti sauce, which only family gets; her famous chocolate cake, pasties, goulash and New Orleans pork chops. Every once in a while I’ll make Dried Beef Gravy over toast or mashed potatoes, which Daddy called SOS and Mother called “Cowboy Meat” so brother would eat it!!
