“I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy; Yankee Doodle do or die!”

I am a patriotic gal, who dearly loves the red, white and blue.

At an early age, my father taught me to always respect the flag by placing my hand over my heart when it passed by. Patriotism was part of growing up in a U.S. Marine Corps family.

The hurrier I go, the behinder I get. I am getting so darned forgetful lately that I end up laughing at myself.

I was in a long conversation with my eldest son, Davy, as he drove home from his job in northwest Arkansas. We chatted about this and that and suddenly I couldn’t remember where I’d laid down my cell-phone. I walked all around the house, looking on end tables, the coffee table, the dining room table, the island in the kitchen…..the list goes on. I even looked in the laundry room, since I had been in there putting laundered towels into the dryer earlier.

Father’s Day was just celebrated. The special day reminded me of how fortunate I was to have two fathers.

Unfortunately, they are both gone, but I hope they know how very special they were to me.

Daddy was a navigator in World War II, but he certainly didn’t raise me to read a map. Just ask Hubby-dear, he’ll tell you.

We just arrived home from a 26-day vacation in our Class C camper. I have never been so happy to see 305 Cobb Drive in my life!!

In the past six weeks, I have dipped my toes in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Atlantic Ocean. Several years ago, I dipped them in the Pacific Ocean. I love the ocean and yet, it scares me.

I am not a strong swimmer and I have a great respect for large and small bodies of water. I’m fine in a swimming pool or wherever I can see and touch the bottom.

Recently, Gibbs (the cat) and I had an unusual morning.

For weeks, I had been putting up with the chirping of a small tree frog. I knew where the noise was coming from, but darned if I could locate the frog.

Hubby-dear had moved a beautiful Peace Plant that we had been nursing for quite a while. It was special to me and I wanted to enjoy it in my home. One morning it had nine beautiful blooms on it. It was glorious.

Hubby-dear “let” me drive the riding mower last week (be-fore the rainstorm). He’s been retired for a full week now and I think he is enjoying all of this togetherness. When we were both working, we would meet each other coming and going….now he’s here all the time and so am I. Some friends have ad-vised that is going to be an adjustment. Oh really?

Weekend work prior to retirement saw us working together on major renovations. He painted and I swept up sawdust. He painted some more and I scraped windows. Well, last week he decided that I could paint the “kill coat” on all of the kitchen drawers. He fixed them on saw horses in the house and I paint-ed away. Looking back, I think I got just as much paint on me than on the drawers.

SHOW DOWN

By Pete Abington

Who will blink first? Will it be the legislators or the governor? Governor John Bel Edwards saw fit to notify some 37,000 elderly and disabled people that the state’s budget uncertainty would force an eviction notice from the nursing homes and other related care. The House and Senate Republican delegation is labeling this as scare tactics and premature. Critics of the governor’s plan allege that we do have the money to balance our budget if the governor just would issue those wasteful cuts.

Braeden, my seven-year-old grandson liked to wear his hair long. However, with hot weather approaching, he decided that a haircut was in order. He know looks like a little man. Cutest think I’ve ever seen. (Believe it or not, I really didn’t care for his long hair!) Little three-year-old sister,

Sometimes, you’re just lucky enough to get a really good waiter or waitress when you are eating out. We’ve been fortunate to find Tammy at Longhorn and just recently discovered another server at Red Lobster the night before Hubby-dear’s surgery.

That night I felt like lobster—one of my favorite meals. The server, a humorous fella, tried to talk me into a huge Lobster-fest special. It didn’t take much talking.

When he served my favorite Raspberry Margarita, he quipped that he threw some lobster in it! He was personable and checked on us regularly.
