I am so thrilled over the success of “1000 Books Before Kindergarten”, our reading programs for small children at the Sabine Parish Library. Robbin Jordon, our children’s librarian has done a wonderful job coordinating the program and encouraging small children throughout the parish to read, read, read!! The program began in late 2017 and after Mother’s death in January 2018, I directed any memorial donations to the program. No two people read more than my parents! Daddy always had a book sitting by his chair and Mom was a big reader, too.

Mayor offers thanks

Just read the Sabine Index, and wanted to tell you, thank you for the fair, factual and balanced story on front page. I have to find a solution that protects our People and at the same time stop this embarrassment to our home town. Thanks again.

As a child, we never took family vacations. Daddy was in the United States Marine Corps and out vacations were loading up the station wagon and driving to our next base of assignment.

Mom and Daddy made traveling fun. We played Auto Bingo, read the roadway signs and marked off the states we’d pass through.

Little brother and I were sharing the back seat. He would pretend to be asleep and stretch out on to my side. It drove me nuts, so I’d complain and my parents would tell me to be glad he was asleep and not “looking” at me. He’d get a sneaky little grin on his face and take up more room.

Daddy was always making me stop reading as we traveled. He wanted me to look at the scenery.

Our most recent camping trip brought back lots of memories!

When we first got our Class C camper, we spent many hours on the road with friends Allen and Vicki. The four of us would load up and hit the road. I especially liked it because we were traveling, and Allen took my place in the front seat and became the navigator! (Not my favorite job!)

Our first long trip was to Memphis to visit Rusty, Dianna & Spencer and Robert, Monte and Max and their families. We spent time on Beale Street eating ribs, listening to music and having fun. After a day or two, we headed out to Kentucky to visit The Creation and a day or two later, The Ark. We even drove into Ohio, just to check that off our list of states visited. We continued on to Arkansas and finally after 8-9 days headed home.

There have been other trips together…..South Toledo Bend, Indian Creek and more….but now we travel together in different vehicles. Allen bit the bullet and got a fifth wheel!

STUDENT LOAN DEBT

The student loan program is out of hand. The portfolio cost is $1.45 trillion and much of it is not being paid back. Many of the graduates who have borrowed under this program graduated in degrees that don’t produce income to pay back the debt. It is frustrating to many who have gotten themselves in the trap of owing a tremendous student loan debt and not making the income to pay it once they leave school, with a diploma or not. The government talks about forgiveness in some way or another. Some are covered by going into certain vocations, but it still is a tremendous cost to start their career.

Why is it when one thing goes wrong, everything goes wrong.

We have started out second phase of remodeling the house. It’s raining and flooding and here we are!!

Last week, the hot water was inadvertently turned off. Oh, well. Cold showers are not my favorite, but I have survived.
